The city of Nantes Burns.

An unexpected betrayal forces Hasting to abandon his closest ally. With his heart turned black, he rekindles the savagery of his race. In sacking Nantes, his bravery and luck earn him a place in the skalds' songs. Word of his deeds reach his kin in the North, and more and more sea captains sail to Francia to join him, hoping his luck might help theirs.

Thor of Dublin, Hasting's old rival, will seek him out and bid him join his new alliance of Sea Kings. Together, they will launch the most ambitious raids their people have ever attempted. They will sail south to the land of the Moors to test their alliance's strength and, if successful, turn their sights to an even more daring prize: Paris.

The Norns make nothing easy. A secret affair will risk unraveling the alliance and bring the sea kings to the brink of civil war.

excellent historical story telling. interesting and compelling. I loved the prosses of growth in each character greatly!

I absolutely love this book series. Not only was it entertaining but it wove historical fact into the stories. and I absolutely love the narrator, not all narrators have the skill that this one does. narration adds 100% to the story and a lot of books miss that that. I wish there were more books in this Saga, I would read them all.

Great fun!

A man of great skill, intelligence and ruthlessness has gone a viking and has conquered the liabilities that hindered him in the first two books…including compassion for fellow humans. A full throttle adventure that reads like the third of a trilogy but changes tact and leaves the door open for future conquests.
I feared at one point it would end the story of Hasting in a jaw dropping conclusion of hubris and betrayal. Though I am glad there may be more ahead for our cross-cultural hero, I would have applauded the bold choice of a gut-wrenching yet unforgettable ending. Maybe someday one of the pantheon of historical fiction writers will not allow the main character to live into old age, even if it’s written in first person…they say your whole life “flashes” before your eyes…

My favorite genre, historical fiction.
