About this listen

In this brilliantly original debut fantasy, a young woman becomes entangled in a power struggle of mythic proportions.

Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian North. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky. There, to her shock, Yeine is named an heiress to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother's death and her family's bloody history.

With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Yeine will learn how perilous it can be when love and hate - and gods and mortals - are bound inseparably together.

A well done, original work of fantasy.

I have listened to several audio books by this author and some are definitely better than others. This is my favorite so far. one thing all of the author's books have in common is unique and careful world-building. if you're looking for a fantasy that does not follow the usual formulas you should definitely give this author a try!

Addicting

Very well written, the characters are well fleshed out as are their actions, you can see them in your minds eye. The narrator brought the entire story to life. Highly recommended

Absolutely astounding. New and exciting.

The weave of this tale is filled with so many vibrantly new pictures that I've yet to find anything that compares. This book turns the fantasy genre on its head in the best ways possible.

Listen!

I loved the Broken Earth trilogy so much I had to explore N.K. Jemisin's other works. This one definitely did not disappoint! While quite different from the Broken Earth books, this story is filled with palace intrigue, steamy romance, and a rich, magic-filled world. The narrator was also excellent--distinct voices, good pacing, and emotionally-engaging voice acting.

AGAIN

big fan of the author and the narrator Cassandra Freeman does a great job, with one exception: the way she pronounces "again" and "against". It does not the accent she uses for every other word or character. I found myself cringing every time she said it. Even with this, I was still able to enjoy the story.

Edit: after posting my review, I went through the others and found the number of people that pointed out the pronunciation of "agaaain" hilarious.

Book was great, but…..

What really has me enjoying it so much was the narrator. Best audio book I’ve ever downloaded.

really enjoyable

not quite as good as Broken Earth, but still a fantastic work of fantasy. Narration was good, but some of her male voices left something to be desired. other voices were wonderful, though

Better than Broken Earth!

I liked this story better than Jamisin's Hugo Award-winning novel The Fifth Season, which was already beautifully original in my reading experience.
