About this listen

Barbara was 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Aston Hall in 1971. From a troubled home, she'd hoped she would find sanctuary there. But during her stay, Barbara was systematically drugged and abused by its head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner.

Somehow, eventually, she started to campaign for answers. This is a shocking account of how vulnerable children were preyed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care.

Gripping story of horrific childhood abuse

Barbara oHare writes an incredible biography of her abused childhood and the people that knew and did nothing to help. I feel for her and all the victims is Aston Hall and the despicable Milner...He was no Doctor.

Dramatic true story.

I wasn’t certain if this was a true story or a historical novel. I googled. The abuses at the named hospital and the named doctor are well documented. By coincidence, I had just finished listening to “ Slave Girl,” by the same narrator. The narrator is excellent, and alternated her accent and tones, adult vs child, very well. This book/Audible is well worth reading. Anyone enjoying this book, should consider The Throwaway Children. Although that Audible is 17 hours, it kept my interest throughout. There is more genuine humanity to that book, though it is a historical novel, not a true story.

Riveting and sad

This book kept me hooked to the end. The true story is a horrifying look at exploitation of children.

Highly recommend this book

Heartbreaking to hear that she endured as a child. She was and still is a fighter, trying to get justice that her and millions of others deserve.

Excellent

I could not put this book down. It’s one of the most horrendous stories I’ve heard.
Totally horrifying and heart wrenching. The author was amazing and the narrator really put energy into this book.
I hope Barbara O’Hare finally gets answers and some peace.

Such a sad, eye opening story.

I had never heard of this story before finding it on here. It is incredibly sad what happens in some places meant to care for those who can not care for themselves.
