About this listen
Do you want to learn more about World War II, but don’t have time to read huge, long books? Then let The History Journals take you on an hourly history tour of the different facets of the war. In this edition, learn about the plot to kill Adolf Hitler dubbed Operation Valkyrie.
When Adolf Hitler stormed to power in Germany during the 1930s, he experienced little opposition for his plans to re-build his adopted homeland after the restraints put upon the country and the reparations they were forced to pay to the victorious Allies in the aftermath of the First World War. Nevertheless, it may come as a surprise to discover that as early as 1938, even before the outbreak of World War II, conspiratorial groups had developed within the German army, with the objective of actually preventing Hitler launching a global conflict.
The story of the German Resistance is one that is rarely heard, but the bravery of the conspirators, despite their lack of success in stopping Hitler in his tracks, is nothing short of heroic. During the opening years of World War II Hitler and his military machine succeeded in virtually every campaign, making a coup unrealistic, but as the Allies gained strength, especially after the Americans entered the fray at the end of 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, an attempt on Hitler’s life began to become viable.
However, it was 1944 before Operation Valkyrie and Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg got within striking distance of assassinating the Fuhrer, and in The Hitler Conspiracies you can follow this remarkable plot that very nearly ended Hitler’s reign of terror, proving beyond doubt that within his own ranks there were those prepared to risk their lives for the sake of humanity.

Story
Israel is a tiny state, and yet it has captured the world's attention, aroused its imagination, and, lately, been the object of its opprobrium. Why does such a small country speak to so many global concerns? More pressingly: Why does Israel make the decisions it does? And what lies in its future? We cannot answer these questions until we understand Israel's people and the questions and conflicts, the hopes and desires, that have animated their conversations and actions.

Story
In 1943, as the war against Nazi Germany raged abroad, President Franklin Roosevelt had a critical goal: a face-to-face sit-down with his allies Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill. This first-ever meeting of the Big Three in Tehran, Iran, would decide some of the most crucial strategic details of the war. Yet when the Nazis found out about the meeting, their own secret plan took shape—an assassination plot that would’ve changed history.

The Third Reich at War lays bare the dynamics of a nation more deeply immersed in war than any society before or since. Fresh insights into the conflict’s great events are here, from the invasion of Poland to the Battle of Stalingrad to Hitler’s suicide in the bunker.

Story
Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness. From his illegitimate birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in the 20th century.

What is the future of war? How can we survive? If Americans are drawn into major armed conflict, can we win? McFate calls upon the legends of military study Carl von Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, and others, as well as his own experience, and carefully constructs the new rules for the future of military engagement, the ways we can fight and win in an age of entropy: one where corporations, mercenaries, and rogue states have more power and ‘nation states’ have less.

From the author of Hitler: Ascent, 1889-1939 comes a riveting account of the dictator's final years, when he got the war he wanted but his leadership led to catastrophe for his nation, the world, and himself. Volker Ullrich offers fascinating new insight into Hitler's character and personality, vividly portraying the insecurity, obsession with minutiae, and narcissistic penchant for gambling that led Hitler to overrule his subordinates and then blame them for his failures.

Story
At the close of World War I, Hitler was an impoverished young artist who scrapped by through selling souvenir paintings, but within a few years, his powerful oratory brought him to the forefront of the Nazi party in Munich and helped make the party much more popular. A smattering of followers in the hundreds quickly became a party of thousands. At the head of it all was a man whose fiery orations denounced Jews, communists, and other "traitors" for bringing upon the German nation the Treaty of Versailles, which had led to hyperinflation and a wrecked economy.
