As the last starfighter in Squadron 111, only Midshipman Henry Gallant can stop the invasion from an alien galactic empire. With the United Planets space fleet on the verge of annihilation, Gallant can expect no help. With so much uncertainty about the aliens, analyzing the captured equipment in his possession is critical.
The fate of Earth could rest on the abilities of Midshipman Henry Gallant. Unfortunately, it is his abilities that are much in doubt. In an era of genetic engineering, he is the only "natural" left in the fleet. His shipmates have all expressed concern that he will not be up to the challenge.
Only bright and attractive junior officer Kelsey Mitchel has shown any sympathy for him. Now, as his navigator on the last starfighter in Squadron 111, her life, as well as a good many others, depends on Henry Gallant.
Follow the career of a young officer in the 22nd-century genetically engineered space navy. Perfect for fans of Honor Harrington and Horatio Hornblower.
The four books in this audiobook collection include Midshipman Henry Gallant in Space, Lieutenant Henry Gallant, Henry Gallant and the Warrior, and Commander Henry Gallant.

Greatly enjoyed the story so far in this boxset of 4 books. Good characters with some human frality, even when genetically perfect. Excellent narration.

But the author over simplified his story line. As I stated, there is nothing to think about or contemplate in these stories. Additional between books 1 and 4 the terminology for space craft, become more and more wooden sailing ship. any moment I expected " Raise the mainsails, ready heated shot mates, one more broadside should do it RRRRRRR"
No he didnt write that, but he might as well have. The love interest, was also...well boring. Hey, it was interesting enough to finish. If you dont expect alot, just some story telling, I think you will enjoy this. If you want sci fi or something to challenge your brain.... THIS IS NOT IT.
Its alright a simple read, or listen.

I relistened to books 1 & 2, and enjoyed those as much as the first time. Book 1, of course is the introduction to Henry as he joins the fleet as a Midshipman, and later works his way up to Commander. It is a time when genetic engineering is pretty much standard for Earthlings. But Henry was not genetically engineered when his mother was pregnant with him. Because of this, Henry must work harder to prove himself constantly and his main competition, Neumann. who has an attitude that genetically engineered humans are superior and that he is better than Gallant, but the first time he tries to prove it, he sabotages Henry, but Henry ends up getting one up on Neumann.
Earth and the fleet are at war with a race called The Titans. This war continues through all of the books. Henry has an exceptional mind and learns to understand the strange language of the Titans. This ability becomes extemely important to the fleet, and Neumann becomes extemely jealous of Henry because of it.
There are two narrators for these books. Oddly enough, Books 1 and 3 are read by Rich Miller, and Books 2 and 4 by Theo Copeland. Both are good narrators, but I have to admit that while Copeland was quite good, he chose an odd British accent for Neumann that makes him come off as kind of Snobby/Queeny. The voice was very different from Miller's straight forward American accent. Switching off between the two narrators was a little odd. I kind of though that since Copeland had done book 2, that he would continue on with the series, but then Miller shows up again for Book 3. I guess it was who was available when needed.

Book 1: Midshipman Henry Gallant in Space: 3.0 Stars
Mildly entertaining. I found it to be too much on the mediocre side. Character's were not developed as well as they should have been, pacing was off, was not able to hold my attention.
Book 2: Lieutenant Henry Gallant: 3.5 Stars
Better than the first book, but still on the mediocre side. Still lacks depth and development.
Book 3: Henry Gallant and the Warrior: 4.0 Stars
Main protagonist finally starts to show some development. Book is more interesting than the previous two.
Book 4: Commander Henry Gallant: 3.75 Stars
Characters still fall a bit flat, but the premise still hold interest.
Overall, I would give the series a 3.5 rounded up to a 4.0. Enjoyable series, but I am not sure if I will continue the series. Some of the conflict between the characters is oversimplified, and some of the situations seem to be a little on the childish side. I may not be the target audience for this series.

Pros: This series explores the rise of an exceptional and brave young man who can be at times very naive.
No matter what branch of service you may ha served in H. Peter Alesso has captured military life and phraseology. Without getting in to to much detail he provides enough science to keep you anticipating the next new idea to be introduced. Solid narration provided by Theo Copeland and Rich Miller both with clear voices and steady cadences.
Some Solid Military Science Fiction

The hero is brave in combat but a complete wimp in personal and professional dealings. It's hard to support him as he repeatedly allows people to walk right over him yet he still tries to please them. I starting skipping annoying and predictable fails in book 4, and at this point I clearly see the next display of wimptitude being set up as once again someone else will get credit for his actions and once again I am sure he will take it laying down. Not a hero that I would want my son to emulate. I may not finish the set, it is so annoying waiting for him to grow some spine.
A lot of promise, but the protagonist dissapoints
