About this listen

In the second installment of New York Times bestselling author Hannah Whitten’s lush romantic epic fantasy series, the glittering and dangerous world of the Sainted King’s royal court is upended when Prince Bastian seizes control and a mysterious dark force begins to take over.

The corrupt king August is dead. Prince Bastian has seized the throne and raised Lore—a necromancer and former smuggler—to his right-hand side. Together they plan to cut out the rot from the heart of the royal court and help the people of Dellaire. But not everyone is happy with the changes. The nobles are sowing dissent, the Kirythean Empire is beating down their door, and Lore’s old allies are pulling away. Even Prince Bastian has changed. No longer the hopeful, rakish, charismatic man Lore knows and loves, instead he’s become reckless, domineering, and cold.

And something has been whispering in her ear. A voice, dark and haunting, that’s telling her there’s more to the story than she knows and more to her power than she can even imagine. A truth buried deep that could change everything.

With Bastian’s coronation fast approaching and enemies whispering on all sides, Lore must figure out how to protect herself, her prince, and her country before they all come crumbling down and whatever dark power has been creeping through the catacombs is unleashed.

"Hannah Whitten is a world-building powerhouse! The Sainted King's court feels like a glittering chandelier—bright and brilliant to behold, with faceted edges sharp enough to kill. I was dazzled."—Erin A. Craig, #1 New York Times bestselling author of House of Roots and Ruin

The character development and the back stories are great although at times it felt a little slow it's still well worth it. I can't wait for the next book!

I love this style of writing were you get to spend time in the world without feeling like the world is predictable and rushed from beginning to end. I love the character progression and true slow burn romance. The angst!!! Also love the twists and in depth lore of the world as well!

The storyline never lulls and keeps at a steady pace. I really hope there is a 3rd book. I need there to be a 3rd book. The Hemlock Queen is a seamless continuation of the first book in the series so if you enjoyed that one, you'll like this one even more.

In love with this series

How come I haven't heard more about this series?! Totally not what I was thinking it was about. The blurbs don't do it justice. Gods inhabiting humans. Can there even be an HEA for the FMC? And if so, who??? While I haven't cried in this series, there are a few sad parts. A few funnies in the form of sarcasm or side comments made. A few jaw-droppers. Suspense. How the heck can he be stopped??? All the deception. Wow. It's going to be hard to wait until the end of July for the next installment! And the audio is awesome!!

Why haven’t I heard more about these books????

I feel like I can copy and paste my review from book one... While the world is amazing and the characters are fantastic, the pacing leaves so much to be desired. I was hoping that not needing to build the world in book two would lead to a faster paced story, but alas, it was still about 30% too long in my opinion.

Will I be tuning in for book three? Most likely. I am really interested to see how this story ends and the cliffhanger for Queen was quite brutal.

Audio was really good, but slow. I sped it up about 0.75x more than I usually listen. Emily Ellet had really great female voices, but her males could be hard to distinguish. Overall I did enjoyed the listen.

Amazing World, Needs Better Pacing
