About this listen

Set against the colorful and magical backdrop of Ireland, The Grey Horse chronicles a time when the Irish people suffered under harsh English overlords who sought to destroy their culture and way of life. Into the Irish town of Carraroe, a magnificent, completely grey stallion appears. The horse brings with him the promise of better times and magical happenings, for he is actually the shape-shifted form of Ruairi MacEibhir, journeyed to such a time of danger in order to win the hand of the woman he loves.

Lovely story with a bit of fairy magic

I got this title on a whim because I love horse stories- but it’s even more of a combination of Irish history and politics woven into fairy tale and legend. The characters seemed true to what you would expect in a village and the mix of reality and imagination is nicely woven together. An enjoyable listen when you want something not too heavy or intense.

a Bit of Irish Magic too good to put down

The Grey Horse
R. A. MacAvoy
Narrator: Steve Coulter
This Story of the Grey Horse is a charming bit of Irish mythology, a touch of romance and a twist of mystery. The pastoral descriptions bring the beauty of the country side of Carraroe to life. Characters Rauiri MacEibhir our hero and the woman he has waited for and loves Mary with the dark hair gives the reader a charming and engaging romance. The horse family that takes Rauiri in an older couple, Anrai O Reachraire an his wife Aine are wonderfully developed supporting characters. Readers are quickly immersed in the life of an 1800’s village and all its inhabitants, gossip, and of course the horses. MacAvoy has a lovely touch bringing the life and magic alive. Definitely a book you can scarcely put down and can enjoy time and again. Steve Coulter’s voice brings the written word to life with wonderful depth.

Love this book

I was a bit hesitant about the narrator at first - but his Irish accent was lovely to listen to.
I will listen to this again & again I imagine. Just as I have read the book over & over.

One of my old favorites - now in Audio - Joy!!!

I have always loved horses, but there are not many authors that write horses well. They turn the horses into four legged people and lose the qualities that make the horse what they are. MacAvoy embraces all that is horse then interweaves her story through it. The characters are dimensional without being weighty; you meet them and know them and have a great time. It's like sitting down to lunch with a best friend - you just enjoy yourself and laugh and don't worry about who is saying what. When it's time to leave you are both in a wonder about where the time flew. This is what her books are like - you immediately immerse into her world and she totally makes it work! You don't even have to be a serious horse lover to enjoy this book, you will get it. But for those horse folks out there - you have to read this book and see what you have been missing! Rory totally rocks the pooka (horse fairy). The narrator did a great job too. I'm happy to see her other books being posted as well. Audible - you are awesome!

This is an old favorite of mine

Would you consider the audio edition of The Grey Horse to be better than the print version?

No, not better. In fact it made it run faster than I would have liked. It is not a big story but a very endearing one.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Charming Irish “ fairy tale”

This charming fairy tale was fun to listen. Reader did Irish voices well.
Must admit I did not expect the big surprise early in the book.

So grab a Guinness and enjoy!

Enchanting

Having married into an Irish family and also owning a Connemara pony I was first intrigued by this book. It was a delightful listen and captivated my imagination and curiosity. My daughter enjoyed it thoroughly as well! The weaving of tails with truth where lines are blurred is delightful.
