Publisher's summary
Here are books 1, 2, and 3 in L. M. Boston's thrilling and chilling tales of Green Knowe, a haunted manor deep in an overgrown garden in the English countryside, which have been entertaining audiences for half a century!
Author Lucy Maria Boston (1892-1990) purchased a ramshackle manor house near Cambridge, England, in 1935, which over a period of two years she lovingly restored. It is the house that inspired her, at the age of 62, to take pen in hand and create the beloved Green Knowe chronicles. L.M. Boston said she wrote her books to please herself - but the pleasure of her stories extends to all who read or listen to them.
Narrator Simon Vance is a native of Brighton, England. After graduating from the Brighton School of Music and Drama, and Leeds University, Vance embarked on a lengthy career with the BBC, in addition to narrating for the Talking Book Service of the Royal National Institute for the Blind. Later, he moved his residence and narrating career to California. His work has received five AudioFile Earphones awards and three Audie Award nominations.
"For those willing to suspend their disbelief and read carefully, the world of Green Knowe offers a wondrous escape." (Amazon.com)

Story
There are three children: Toby, who rides the majestic horse Feste; his mischievous little sister, Linnet; and their brother, Alexander, who plays the flute. The children warmly welcome Tolly to Green Knowe...even though they've been dead for centuries. But that's how everything is at Green Knowe. The ancient manor hides as many stories as it does dusty old rooms. And the master of the house is great-grandmother Oldknow, whose storytelling mizes present and past with the oldest magic in the world.

Story
George MacDonald, described by W.H. Auden as "one of the most remarkable writers of the 19th century", was valued in his own time as an original thinker and spiritual guide. Of all his writing, it is the fairy tales that have retained their fascination, and this collection includes all 11 stories. The fairy tales feature the stock characters of traditional tales—fairies both good and bad, and children undertaking precarious journeys. Often adopting paradox and nonsense as Lewis Carroll did, the stories invite adults to deploy the same open-mindedness as children.

Story
Hard Times is Dickens's most political novel. Set in the industrial north of England, in Coketown, he examines the lives of working people, who are taught by the capitalists Gradgrind and Bounderby to think only of the facts of life and not to indulge in imagination. Gradgrind’s own children have been so educated and as a result are dysfunctional and disconnected from their feelings. Only the travelling circus company of Sleary seems to offer any hope of humanity in Coketown.

Story
This haunting drama of vengeance and forgiveness crowns the group of tragicomic romances that Shakespeare composed at the end of his career. Sometimes read as his farewell to the stage, the play contains some of Shakespeare's most lyrical verse. Prospero, wise Duke of Milan, has been deposed by Antonio, his wicked brother, and exiled with his daughter Miranda to a mysterious island. But Prospero possesses supernatural powers. Aided by the spirit Ariel, Prospero uses his magical art to bring his enemies under his control.

Story
When level-headed Francie arrives in Roswell, New Mexico, for her college roommate’s UFO-themed wedding—complete with a true-believer bridegroom—she can’t help but roll her eyes at all the wide-eyed talk of aliens, which obviously don’t exist. Imagine her surprise, then, when she is abducted by one. Odder still, her abductor is far from what the popular media have led her to expect, with a body like a tumbleweed and a mass of lightning-fast tentacles. Nor is Francie the only victim of the alien’s abduction spree.

Great Value
These two combination packs of the Green Knowe series are a wonderful value. For less than the price of one of the books you get three! At least the way they are priced at the moment. I have read all of the books years ago, some more often than others, and I am currently enjoying listening to all 6 in a row, having purchased the two combo sets. The only thing that would make them better is if Audible's formating made it easier to find the beginning of each story. But if you are trying to find the 2nd or 3rd book, by listening to the beginning of the chapter in about the right place you can manage, and if listening to the whole series at once it is no problem at all.

The narrator is too quiet. i had to max the volume and it made the speaker crackle. my child prefers narrative that is more lively.
