About this listen
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the critically acclaimed author of Girl in Pieces comes a raw, heart-wrenching novel about a teenager facing down her struggles with alcohol—and the journey she must take to heal.
“A must-read.”—Laura Nowlin, #1 New York Times bestselling author of If He Had Been with Me
“Everyone needs this book.”—Sloan Harlow, New York Times bestselling author of Everything We Never Said
Everyone in fifteen-year-old Bella’s life needs something from her. Her mom needs her to help around the house, her dad needs her to not make waves, her ex needs her to not be so much. The only person who never needed anything from her was her grandmother—and now she’s dead.
There’s only one thing that dulls the pressure: alcohol. Vodka, beer, peppermint schnapps—alcohol smooths the sharp edges of Bella’s life. And what’s the big deal? Everyone drinks. Besides, Bella can stop whenever she wants. But after she gets blackout drunk at a Thanksgiving party and wakes up in the hospital, it’s time to face reality. And for Bella, reality means rehab.
Gorgeously written and deeply compassionate, Kathleen Glasgow’s The Glass Girl is a candid exploration of the forces pushing young women toward addiction—and what it really takes to help them get better.

Story
Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At 17 she's already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you. Every new scar hardens Charlie's heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

Story
Kelly Sundberg’s husband, Caleb, was a funny, warm, supportive man and a wonderful father to their little boy Reed. He was also vengeful and violent. But Sundberg did not know that when she fell in love, and for years told herself he would get better. It took a decade for her to ultimately accept that the partnership she desired could not work with such a broken man. In her remarkable book, she offers an intimate record of the joys and terrors that accompanied her long, difficult awakening, and presents a haunting, heartbreaking glimpse into why women remain too long in dangerous relationships.

Story
Biz knows how to float. She has her people, her posse, her mom, and the twins. She has Grace. And she has her dad, who tells her about the little kid she was, and who shouldn't be here but is. So Biz doesn't tell anyone anything. Not about her dark, runaway thoughts, not about kissing Grace or noticing Jasper, the new boy. And she doesn't tell anyone about her dad. Because her dad died when she was seven. And Biz knows how to float, right there on the surface - normal, okay, regular, fine.

Story
That's What Junkies Do is a brutally honest, often dark journey of one man's struggle with alcoholism and drug addiction. The story starts innocently enough in 1980's Brooklyn, NY, with a young boy, Thomas Figlioli, making a bad choice so he could gain the respect of a group of kids he looked up to and admired. Alcohol gives him the courage to be the person he always wanted to be. His fear and insecurity leaves and his lifelong struggle begins. When thoughts of ending it all become a better choice than living how he is, Thomas finally asks for help.

Story
It’s been three years since the Virgil County High School Massacre. Three years since my best friend, Sarah, was killed in a bathroom stall during the mass shooting. Everyone knows Sarah’s story - that she died proclaiming her faith. But it’s not true. I know because I was with her when she died. I didn’t say anything then, and people got hurt because of it. Now Sarah’s parents are publishing a book about her, so this might be my last chance to set the record straight. Except Sarah’s martyrdom is important to a lot of people, people who don’t take kindly to what I’m trying to do.

Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny. But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming.

Story
From Eliza Clark, the author of the brilliant novels Boy Parts and Penance and one of Granta’s Best Young British Novelists, comes a fierce, visionary and darkly comic story collection. A woman welcomes a parasite into her body. A teenager longs for perfect skin. A scientist tends to fragile alien flora. A young man takes the night into his own hands. Unsettling, revelatory, and laced with her signature dark humor, Eliza Clark’s debut short story collection plumbs the depths of that most basic human feeling: hunger.

Flawed but important
4.5 STARS
Kathleen Glasgow once again has her finger on the pulse of teenage girl angst with THE GLASS GIRL, the story of a young girl’s journey through alcoholism and precarious recovery.
Like many substance abusers, Bella begins her downward spiral as an attempt to self-medicate her anxiety. She’s dealing with warring divorced parents, her mother won’t stop criticizing her dad and he minimizes Bella’s drinking while drinking every night. She loves her little sister Ricki, despite the seven-year-old’s high-maintenance behavior issues. Bella’s best friend Amber has had enough, even before a video of Bella flaunting her breasts goes viral. Rehab isn’t easy, filled with as many downs as ups.
The rehab experience is one readers have seen in nearly every book and movie on psych hospitals and rehabs. Strong denial, bonding, someone dies or almost dies leading to incite and acceptance of issues. If not for this lack of originality I’d have rated up to five stars.
At times THE GLASS GIRL feels like a stream of consciousness anxiety attack and although the rehab recognizes Bella’s anxiety disorder, she’s never evaluated by a psychiatrist so non-narcotic, non-addictive medication is to regulate her brain chemistry is never on the table, which might have made Bella’s recovery journey a lot easier. When brain chemistry causes nearly constant fight, flight or freeze reactions, achieve anything is nearly impossible or sustainable.
Though flawed, THE GLASS GIRL is an important book and should be stocked in every library and counselor’s office.

Every stereotype possible about addiction and teens
This was just way over the top for me. While some of it resonated with me deeply, the other parts were just incredibly overly dramatic. I preordered this book so I could read it right away. In the end, it was just meh.
