About this listen
An extraordinary true story of resilience, courage, hope and finding lightness after the heaviest of landings.
What if we could figure out a way to see beauty in every part of living—the world, its people and its lessons? To still be able to feel pain and sadness, but see it all as part of this wild ride we call life? We often tell ourselves we'll be grateful when we have that job, or get that car, or that outfit. But what if we could just change our mindsets to one of wonder, of appreciation, of awe in simply being?
For years, Emma Carey was a regular young adult who would wake up and go about their day on autopilot, someone who would look at a sunset and feel unaffected, someone who was living, but not really alive. That is, until something happened that enabled her to really see life for the gift it is. Emma was in a skydiving accident that made her a paraplegic. This book is not just about Emma's fall from the sky and how she learned to walk without ever regaining feeling in her legs but also about the beliefs and ideas that helped her survive. These are the beliefs and ideas that make her the happiest she's ever been.
While Emma did eventually learn how to walk again, her changed mindset is the thing she continues to be proudest of, and most grateful for. Emma's story is one that will capture your heart and heal your mind, as she guides us through what she has learned along the way. With a maturity and evenness beyond her years, as well as a down-to-earth approach to hope and possibility, Emma shows us how to live in the world when what we expected doesn't fit our reality. She shows us how to really look, and see beauty where it is.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

It was a perfect Wednesday morning when Alex 'Chumpy' Pullin kissed his partner, Ellidy, goodbye to go spearfishing. Most days Ellidy would go to the beach too, but that day she didn't. Later, there was a knock at the door. A man had been found unconscious on the ocean floor. It was Chumpy. From that moment, Ellidy's world stopped. There was deep grief, disbelief and then the gradual realisation that this was real. Ellidy's partner of eight years, a World Champion snowboarder, a man of energy and music, was gone.

One of just two survivors of a devastating plane crash that killed more than 100 people, 16-year-old Kechi was left with third-degree burns over 65 percent of her body. More than My Scars is her incredible story. A story of not just surviving impossible odds but thriving in a world that is too often caught up with how we look on the outside rather than seeing that our true value is within. Now in her early 30s, Kechi has spent the last 16 years refusing to be defined by her trauma.

Story
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

In The Anatomy of a Calling, Lissa Rankin, MD, makes a simple yet revolutionary claim: We are all, every single one of us, heroes. We are all on what Joseph Campbell calls "a hero's journey"; we are all on a mission to step into our true nature and fulfill the assignment our souls were sent to Earth to fulfill. Navigating the hero's journey, Dr. Rankin argues, is one of the cornerstones of living a meaningful, authentic, healthy life.

Story
In 1973, Norma Cobb, her husband Lester, and their five children pulled up stakes in the lower 48 and headed north to Alaska to follow a pioneer dream of claiming land under the Homestead Act. The only land available lay north of Fairbanks near the Arctic Circle where grizzlies outnumbered humans 20 to one. In addition to fierce winters and predatory animals, the Alaskan frontier drew the more unsavory elements of society's fringes. From the beginning, the Cobbs found themselves pitted in a life or death feud with unscrupulous neighbors who would rob from new settlers.

Transparent, relatable, well told
I love the transparency Emma gives. I am going to have my husband listen to this book. He had a TBI several years ago. So much is relatable. Thank you for writing this.

Amazing Book
Well written, inspirational and quite moving. How one young woman survives a skydiving accident and learns to appreciate life and live it to the fullest. Oh yeah, and she learns to walk again! Unreal and utterly miraculous. Full of words of wisdom for anyone with challenges large or small. A life philosophy from an infectiously positive person who also shares their deepest pains.

WOW!
If I could give it more than a five star rating, I most certainly would! Emma, you were extremely candid about your sometimes heartbreakingly excruciating journey, sharing things I doubt I could've or would've even known how to talk about them, let alone sharing them in a book. You have a gift of genuine expression and putting things into perspective. Due to a birth defect, I first used crutches and now use a wheelchair for mobility. Many times you expressed things I've felt, but never known how to express. This book draws and blends two worlds together, the physically challenged and those who have no idea of the daily implications of those challenges and teaches us that we are all very privileged with this precious gift called life, where joy can be held deep within and miracles exist in the mundane moments of everyday life. Thank you, Emma, for writing this book.

One of the best books I’ve ever read!
I have suffered great loss and have had to choose to keep going each day, always choosing joy. This resonated with me!
My joy and strength comes from Jesus Christ though not from myself. He is the same yesterday and today and sovereign so no matter what happens He is faithful and true!
