About this listen

A voyage across the ocean becomes the odyssey of a lifetime for a young Irish woman….

Ireland, 1912…

Fourteen members of a small village set sail on RMS Titanic, hoping to find a better life in America. For 17-year-old Maggie Murphy, the journey is bittersweet. Though her future lies in an unknown new place, her heart remains in Ireland with Samus, the sweetheart she left behind. When disaster strikes, Maggie is one of the few passengers in steerage to survive. Waking up alone in a New York hospital, she vows never to speak of the terror and panic of that fateful night again.

Chicago, 1982…

Adrift after the death of her father, Grace Butler struggles to decide what comes next. When her great-grandmother Maggie shares the painful secret about Titanic that she's harbored for almost a lifetime, the revelation gives Grace new direction and leads both her and Maggie to unexpected reunions with those they thought lost long ago.

Inspired by true events, The Girl Who Came Home poignantly blends fact and fiction to explore the Titanic tragedy's impact and its lasting repercussions on survivors and their descendants.

I had thought I would not want to read a book about the Titanic as we all know how it ends but the authors take on this was spectacular . I lost myself in this book. The narration was wonderful.

A HAUNTING, HEART-WRENCHING, YET BEAUTIFUL STORY — A MUST READ!

I wasn’t quite sure how I would feel about this book, I only knew I was hoping it wouldn’t be another re-telling like thee movie with Jack and Rose (which I didn’t care for at ALL).

This book so exceed anything I was hoping for! The author did a brilliant job of bringing each character and their thoughts and feelings alive! It was as if I were seeing everything they were seeing, feeling what THEY were feeling. That’s a rare talent…

The character of Maggie, especially as a young girl, preparing to leave her family, the young man she loved, and then aboard the Titanic — this character will stay with me for a very LONG time (I believe I will be thinking about this story and AL of its very well-developed characters for a long time to come).

I found it hard to believe this was the author’s first novel! Her words, especially when Maggie woke up in a hospital and began to remember, literally brought me to tears (not an easy thing to do), as did the pictures she painted with her words, as families of those who had been aboard the Titanic, waited for word about their loved ones.

Having been raised by my grandmother, I especially enjoyed the close relationship between Maggie and her great-granddaughter, Grace.

Although this book sounds as if it may be nothing but depressing, I didn’t find this to be the case. There were plenty of moments of happiness.

This novel grabbed me from the very beginning and wouldn’t let go (I listened to it every minute, finishing it in just one day). Not only am I re-listening to it a second time now back-to-back, but I have already purchased another novel by this very talented writer.

This review would not be complete without complimenting the superb (amazing!) voice talents of the narrators who brought each character to life!

The woman who voices Maggie has such a beautiful voice and such a lovely Irish lilt to her speech. I could listen to her FOREVER! She makes me wish I had a lovely Irish accent, instead of my own, hard American speech pattern.

My highest kudos to all involved in this novel.

Don’t bypass this one!
