About this listen
As a colossal statue takes shape in Renaissance Florence, the lives of a master sculptor and a struggling painter become stunningly intertwined.
Florence, 1500. Fresco painter Jacopo Torni longs to make his mark in the world. But while his peers enjoy prestigious commissions, his meager painting jobs are all earmarked to pay down gambling debts.
When Jacopo hears of a competition to create Florence's greatest sculpture, he pins all his hopes on a collaboration with his boyhood companion, Michelangelo Buonarroti. But will the frustrated artist ever emerge from the shadow of his singularly gifted friend?
From the author of The Painter's Apprentice and The Gondola Maker comes a gorgeously crafted, immersive tale of Renaissance Italy.
Based on a true story.

Story
Some 500 years ago, Sandro Botticelli, a painter of humble origin, created work of unearthly beauty. An intimate associate of Florence’s unofficial rulers, the Medici, he was commissioned by a member of their family to execute a near-impossible project: to illustrate all 100 cantos of The Divine Comedy by the city’s greatest poet, Dante Alighieri. A powerful encounter between poet and artist, sacred and secular, earthly and evanescent, these drawings produced a wealth of stunning images but were never finished.

Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

Giant
This is a wonderful story of the artists, the Renaissance, and Florence. It’s history and art history taught in the most effective way - through stories.

A Marvelous Read/Listen for the Love of a Giant
if you love the Art and the marvelous history behind it, this is another great story from the research of Laura Morrelli. Her words take you back to the time when Florence was influx between the Medici and Rome, when the guilds were in charge and debtors were the various artists who built the marvels that make our hearts and eyes full with overwhelming passion. The story of Lindico deals with in the shadows of his great friend, Michaelangelo while he works on the Giant marble statue of David that Lindico brought him home to do, will inspire and cause you to get wrapped up in another time wanting to learn more and desiring to see those great works of art once more.

Completely off topic
I've spent a few hours listening to this book and it's disappointing for the simple fact that it's not centered on Michelangelo and it's not centered on his sculpture.. It's centered upon a ambling loser. And thus, I give up listening to this book because it's wasting my time.
