Story
Karana, a Ghalas-at Indian, lives peacefully on the island with her tribe until the arrival of a Russian otter-hunting ship. In spite of the deal the Aleutian hunters make with her father, the Ghalas-at chief, in the end they prove treacherous, killing most of the tribe. Karana's younger brother, Ramo, is all that is left of her family. Fearful of the Aleuts' return, the remaining Indians decide to move to another island, and are offered safe passage by some friendly ships. But as Karana boards the ship to leave the island forever, she is unable to find Ramo.

Story
All summer Sara Godfrey has fretted over herself, her impossible body, her terrible new haircut. One moment she's elated, the next, she's in tears. And she can't figure out why. Maybe her wildly changing moods are tied to the sudden and unaccountable appearance of the swans, which hold the rapt attention of Charlie, Sara's mentally handicapped brother, who she loves far more than herself these days. When he disappears, in her anguish, Sara turns to Joe Melby, whom she has long despised, and together they search for him.

Story
When Amanda Eyre Ward's 13-year-old son, Harry, dove headfirst into the world of sneaker culture, she found herself baffled by his obsession with flashy, expensive shoes that seemed like mere status symbols. Determined to bridge the gap with her teenage son, Ward reluctantly decided to embrace the mantra of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em". As she shed her preconceptions and immersed herself in the quest to snag the latest drops, Ward discovered a community far richer than she had imagined.

Enjoyable and Thought Provoking
When you're faced with that child that is just, well, different, sometimes you worry. You wonder if they'll turn out ok. If it's just a phase or if something is really wrong. Listening to this book as a mother of young boy I thought about how I would respond if one of my children acted as Georgie did, just a little out of step from all the other kids. I loved how her family responded to her, gave her space to be her. Protected her and cherished her.
I read some reviews before diving into this one, and while it's rather outside of my normal genre, I was pleasantly surprised to find I actually really enjoyed it. Only after finishing it did I learn it's part of a series, Book #4 in the "Hall Family Chronicles." I found the writing to be really enjoyable. The way each of the characters were described, and the details that made them come alive. I feel almost as if I watched this as a movie.
I felt like listening to Thoreau's "Walden and On the Duty of Civil Disobedience" gave me a better appreciation for the constant reference to him throughout the book.
One review I read said they thought the goose prince speaking felt unnecessary. And, I think so as well. I wanted somewhere at the end of the book to have it all explained. To have the author spell out the analogies, and tell you Georgie never really did fly, it was all in her imagination. But, also I'm not sad that she didn't.
It's a sweet book, and certainly one that is enjoyable and thought provoking.
