About this listen
A new novel from this master storyteller - In a gentle village on the Scottish borders, Roland Fox, a young aspiring writer, moves in next door to the equally young and attractive Jane Highsmith, a newly qualified veterinary surgeon. But the growing attraction between them is muted by the recent and mysterious death of her beloved great-grandfather. There are all the ingredients present for a traditional village mystery in true Gerald Hammond style and with his usual Scottish flavour.

A Writer and a Veterinarian.
The pace of this story is absolutely perfect. A lovely read with enough twists and characters to keep me interested for every page. I never had the feeling I should skip forward, either, because it was fun.
Roland is a writer, he's published one novel and has now moved into a small house he inherited, is pecuniary status is rather depressed. This is located in Newton Lauder, the same town where many of Gerald Hammond's stories are set. He meets Jane, a newly graduated veterinarian; she asks him to help her look into the death of her great grandfather.
In the process of their inquiries, we meet her family, many from the town, and they develop a relationship.
Suffice it to say that this is a thoroughly enjoyable performance and story.
