About this listen

This brand-new unabridged audiobook of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA Award-winning actor, director, and author Andy Serkis.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Perfection.

I own the Rob Inglis narration, and he did quite a decent job. I mean no disrespect at all to him. I've listened to it dozens of times.

However, when I heard that Andy Serkis was doing a new narration of what I consider some of the finest books ever written in the English language, I just about died. I knew instantly he would be brilliant, and I was not mistaken.

His talent is off the charts. He's one of the finest actors of his generation. He was flawless in the films.

I'm not finished with these new releases yet, but so far I have not one single complaint to make. As expected, he's incredible.

The only narrators I can think of who would be anywhere near this performance would be Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, or Cate Blanchett, and they wouldn't be better. That's some of the highest praise I could ever pay anyone. My mother read these books to me while I was still in the womb, and 56 years later the story remains an essential, vital part of my life.

Thank you, Andy. Thank you for this masterpiece of narration.

not a let down.

the audiobooks have SO much more in them than the movies that I might as well not even have watched the movies.

Best Narration Out There

This is basically the platonic ideal of an audiobook. When you imagine a gripping story and a narrator who can keep you interested and create separate, realistic, terrifying, hilarious voices for each and every character… this is it. I knew Andy Serkis was a versatile actor, but I had no idea how broad his range of voice acting really was. He’s phenomenal, pure and simple. I’ve read LOTR many many times, and I can honestly say the story and characters have never been brought to life so vividly. More Andy Serkis audiobooks please!!!

By far the best

Andy Serkis is the Jim Dale of the LOR series. The voices and timing of his rendition are spot on. I felt like I was in Tolkien’s mind while he was writing, it made my imagination run.

Andy Serkis nails it

Honestly, Serkis could narrate paint drying and it would still be captivating, but Andy Serkis narrating Lord of the Rings is an incredible gift.

Absolutely Fabulous!

I was hesitant to purchase this edition having already purchased the version Rob Inglis narrates. You can feel the love and the passion come through for the story as Andy Serkis reads the story. This version is a must for any fan of Tolkien or Mr. Serkis! This is a purchase I do not regret at all.

Love the narration

I sometimes struggle with audio books because it’s more difficult to imagine the imagery and characters as vividly as i do when reading a physical book. But this narration was theatrical and the differentiation between characters was clear. So good!
