Helpful
as a person with social anxiety, I found this book to be very helpful with its encouragement to identify the social triggers that impede me in social environments. It also teaches valuable activities on how to practice conversations with friends and family members so that when you are in the position to have these conversations with strangers, you will be ready. One of the main themes throughout the book that I found very helpful was the fact that you need to be your authentic self with people and go into conversations with a curious and open mindset, so you’re actually engaging in conversation and not just putting on a performance of what you think you should be doing. I found that so useful because when you suffer from social anxiety, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but if you are tackling new conversations with genuine effort and an open mind, things will fall into place more easily. I also really resonated with the chapter on nonverbal communication. You learn all about things like appropriate eye contact, body language and posture, and what it may convey. Being an introverted person, I appreciated that I could practice these things on my own with no one watching and gain confidence on learning how to do these things in a public setting.

Helped me break the ice
I’ve always struggled with small talk and felt super awkward in social settings. This book made things feel less overwhelming and gave me tools I could actually use right away. I started applying a few tips at work and even struck up a conversation at a coffee shop (which never happens). It’s not magic, but it definitely helped boost my confidence. If socializing doesn’t come naturally to you, this is a solid place to start.
