Publisher's summary

Do you have anyone in your life who can't seem to stick with a project, meet a deadline, or even clean up after themselves? All of us feel we deserve special treatment sometimes. Some people live with this entitled attitude, such as:

  • Professionals who wander from job to job looking for a boss who will see them as amazing as they consider themselves to be - whether they're productive or not
  • Young adults who refuse to grow up and so go nowhere
  • Spouses or dates who believe, "I'm special, and I deserve more than you're giving me"
  • Leaders who expect special treatment because of their position, not because of their character

If you have a difficult relationship with an entitled person, or if you have discovered entitlement in yourself, understand this: It doesn't have to stay this way. There is a cure. It's called the Hard Way and it works.

In The Entitlement Cure, Dr. John Townsend explains that the Hard Way is a habit that focuses on doing whatever is needed even if it is difficult, uncomfortable, takes longer, and requires more energy. Dr. Townsend offers daily steps, such as risk-taking, to help you or those you love choose the Hard Way.

Ultimately, entitlement fails us. We don't develop the character abilities and relationships necessary to reach success and become the people God intended us to be. By contrast, Hard Way people have better relationships, reach their goals, have a clear job direction, enjoy rich spiritual growth, and are equipped to face and solve challenges.

As Dr. Townsend writes, "Stand against entitlement in every form in which it manifests itself. Resolve your own tendencies toward the disease. Be a loving and firm force for helping those in its trap to find life and hope. And you will make the world a better place". Discover why the Hard Way is the best way in this practical guide to true success.

Great Specific to-do's

2 things I learned:

-Deserve vs. Need. You don't deserve you might want or need something

-Take some sort of risk every week

I will listen to this book again. Made a few good bookmarks in this one.

Loved this book!

This book gives lots of perspective and lots of different examples of how we become entitled. I have now listened to it three times. I really enjoy it. And I totally recommend it.

Read this book rather than listen

Dr. John Townsend has written another much needed book. It is great for those who live with or work with a narcissistic person. I believe, however, that a professional narrator might have done better in reading the book.
I had a difficult time paying attention to and digesting some of the information. I felt as though I was sitting in a university Masters class with a professor that was limited by time restraints. Just a little more slowly read with a few pauses would make all the difference in the world. I say this to inform you that you need to be ready to intently concentrate. Reading the book might help you get more out of it than listening.

Practical guide to identifying entitlement

I found this book deeply insightful and thorough in its approach. With fifteen chapters the author systematically inventoried my attitudes and behaviors, challenged me to improve my weaknesses, praised my strengths, and explained spiritual topics in a fresh and thought provoking way.

He identifies ADHD and clinical depression as mental health issues that require professional intervention, but if you don’t have either of those diagnosis, he will push you like a high school football coach to improve yourself, and achieve your goals towards a genuinely fulfilling life.

This book is helpful in dealing with someone that is entitled by handling them with grace and mercy but at the same time with boundaries helping them stay accountable.

Helped me to develop discipline

Where does The Entitlement Cure rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is the second audiobook I've ever listened to (first one was in 2009 and now its 2016), and it was my reason for joining audible because I wanted to read it so badly. This sets a very high standard for audiobooks I will listen to in the future; was very helpful so much that I bought a physical copy to read it again.

What did you like best about this story?

Well worded, the syntax and writing style is very understandable, relaxed, and thorough. I felt like some sections/examples/descriptions described myself or others in my mind to a T. Chapter 6 was especially life changing for me to develop the structure, and very concrete, doable strategies to bring about discipline. I also very much enjoyed the various scripture references, for that extra understanding and motivation.

What about John Townsend’s performance did you like?

The narration was awesome and the narrator really points out parts of the text I would most likely go over without particularly noting if I was reading the physical copy. His tone of voice and clarity helped bring the message of this book home much better for my own perspective.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, it made me cry a few times as I could personally relate to many of the entitlement examples, and of the common feelings these mentioned people felt: overwhelmed, discouraged, deserving, etc. But the text of the book is very graceful that it doesn't criticize the person-who-needs-help as much as it rather meets you where you are, and tries to help you, and provides a guideline for your building of structure.

Any additional comments?

Very much recommend.

Wonderful book. Awesome insight.

The book is excellent. The examples are great and the insights are fantastic. I haven't met John Townsend personally yet, and I love his work. The tough love is that his narration was difficult to listen to.
