About this listen

The number of people who become involved with partners who abuse them emotionally and/or who are emotionally abusive themselves is phenomenal, and yet emotional abuse is the least understood form of abuse. In this breakthrough book, Beverly Engel, one of the world's leading experts on the subject, shows us what emotional abuse is and what to do about it. Whether you suspect you are being emotionally abused, fear that you might be emotionally abusing your partner, or think that both you and your partner are emotionally abusing each other, this book is for you.

The Emotionally Abusive Relationship will tell you how to identify emotional abuse and how to find the roots of your behavior. Combining dramatic personal stories with action steps to heal, Engel provides prescriptive strategies that will allow you and your partner to work together to stop bringing out the worst in each other and stop the abuse. By teaching those who are being emotionally abused how to help themselves and those who are being emotionally abusive how to stop abusing, The Emotionally Abusive Relationship offers the expert guidance and support you need.

Life changing

Extremely helpful in how it walks you through recognizing emotional abuse and healing yourself from it. It not only addresses the causes of how somebody allows themself to be emotionally abused and is often unable to extricate themselves front the abusive relationship, but it addresses how the abuser get there and how he/she can also make the necessary changes to stop the cycle of abuse.

Covers both sides of the problem

As a victim of emotional abuse, it’s easy to think I would never do that to someone else. This book helps show how the roles can flip-flop, and a victim can become abusive. It also offers hope, where other books tell you to flee the relationship.

Amazing SELF GROWTH

I cannot summarize my entire life in this review, but I can say that this book was recommended by my therapist that I’ve been seeing every week for the past six months, and I’ve loved listening to every minute of it. The accountability and self growth I’ve gone through just by actively listening to this book and facing myself through the process has been very challenging, but highly gratifying. Those I love, including my two young children will endure less abuse and more love and joy. Kudos to Beverly Engle. What an intelligent and truth spoken woman. Thank you for your help, Beverly.

Chapter 14 - How to Solve your Victim Role

Very interesting. Both stances if you are the abuser or the victim. Explanation of emotional abuse is how this book started. I like that it said that was a severe damage to the self and the relationship. Not just belittling but to control, demean by degrading, berating, negating your feelings and intimidation, Other threats like Symbolic Violence: as kicking and slamming doors, throwing objects,
I'm very happy to endorse this book. Its brought a lot of light.

Great

I was worried that this would be another book that just blames every problem you experience on your partner and being a bit too soft but instead, this was a very balanced perspective on abuse and how to resolve the issues

Bad advice

The information about what is emotional abuse and the examples are great. But telling people “you are being abusive” is by far an accusation that does not feed into healthy dynamics. There are many judgements that fall into unnecessary aggressions. This is a mindset that makes people engage in more fights.

Good for its time

I think this book would have been a beacon when it was written. Now there is so much more knowledge and the mental health industry has come a long way…. I felt this was outdated and simplistic of its examples.
