Acerca de esta escucha

What happens when a young Wall Street investment banker spends a small fortune to have lunch with Warren Buffett? He becomes a real value investor. In this fascinating inside story, Guy Spier details his career from Harvard MBA to hedge fund manager. But the path was not so straightforward. Spier reveals his transformation from a Gordon Gekko wannabe, driven by greed, to a sophisticated investor who enjoys success without selling his soul to the highest bidder. Spier's journey is similar to the thousands that flock to Wall Street every year with their shiny new diplomas, aiming to be King of Wall Street. Yet what Guy realized just in the nick of time was that the King really lived 1,500 miles away in Omaha, Nebraska. Spier determinedly set out to create a new career in his own way. Along the way he learned some powerful lessons which include: why the right mentors and partners are critical to long term success on Wall Street; why a topnotch education can sometimes get in the way of your success; that real learning doesn't begin until you are on your own; and how the best lessons from Warren Buffett have less to do with investing and more to do with being true to yourself. Spier also reveals some of his own winning investment strategies, detailing deals that were winners but also what he learned from deals that went south. Part memoir, part Wall Street advice, and part how-to, Guy Spier takes readers on a ride through Wall Street but more importantly provides those that want to take a different path with the insight, guidance, and inspiration they need to carve out their own definition of success.

This is not a how to invest book. It's a how to think about investing book. We look for investments everywhere in life monetarily and otherwise. Very instructive.

Excellent listen.

This should be required reading for every serious investor. It helps you to understand what is really the most important thing and to keep you from going down in flames.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book for two reasons.
1) value investing is not monolithic
2) overcoming prejudices is difficult and and for a sophisticated investor to extract some of the valid insights from the guru Tony Robbins shows some humility

Value investing redux

This and Roger Lowensteins book on Buffett are the greatest books I have ever read on investing.
Great read. Guy Spier is so honest

Guy Spier wrote this book, in my opinion, not to provide insights into how he used the X’s and O, of the financial world to build his fortune. Rather, he writes about how he delved deeply and meaningfully into the highs and lows of his own psyche to master the personality traits that make him a unique person to carve out a life of investing to his own liking. His exploration talks about the reasons we invest, which only at a base and simplistic level involve amassing wealth.

A little about investing, more about life.

Great book on life and investment

I sat behind Guy Spier at the 2023 Berkshire Hathaway meeting. I didn't know anything about him, but I was shocked to see how many people LOVED him. I bought this book to find out who he is and why my fellow BRK shareholders admire him so much. He shows how to enjoy the life of an investor, where you make a positive impact on the world by recognizing your faults, building up others, and always learning.
