Publisher's summary

When an almost-magician named Moongobble and his talking toad, Urk, move into the abandoned cottage near Edward's home, it seems like a dream come true. After all, Edward has been longing for some excitement.

Alas, Moongobble still has a lot to learn about magic (most of his spells just turn things into cheese) and all too soon his dreams of becoming a magician are in danger. Edward will do anything to save his friend's magic, even face the dreaded Dragon of Doom!

Funny and suspenseful, seasoned with original music and spiced with Bruce Coville's special brand of wackiness, this enchanting recording is sure to cast a spell of delight on the entire family.

Editorial reviews

Dragons aren't such bad creatures, are they? Bruce Coville turns fantasy on its ear in this story of Edward, an apprentice to a sorcerer of mediocre abilities. In order to help his mentor, Edward faces a rather underwhelming dragon, among other adventures. The story is narrated by young actor Ryan Sparkes, who gives an enthusiastic performance as Edward. His youthful exuberance carries the innocence of a bygone age and may remind older listeners of the sort of boy heroes that populated late-50s and early-60s children's films, or, say, "Leave It to Beaver." This energy adds to the Coville's light-handed humor. Also featured in the cast are Robert Steingraber as Moongobble the Magician, David Baker as Urk, the talking toad, and Sam Goldsman as the Rusty Knight.

Enjoyable

This book is thoroughly enjoyable for children and adults. I purchased this book for my 11 year old great-nephew, and he said he really liked it. The nine year was captivated as well. I listened to it myself and thought it was cute, but a bit young for an 11 year old. Would probably be more appealing for the 5-8 year old set. Since the 11 year old liked it I will get the rest of the series for him, and since my niece has 5 boys under the age of 12 they can all listen. Since it is relatively short, just an hour long, it's easy for their somewhat hyperactive attention spans. The author does have a book that I will get for the 11 and 12 year old called "I Was a Sixth Grade Alien", which is about 3 hours long and will probably suit the needs of the older boys better.

Wonderful story

This story is perfect for young adults or adults who are young at heart. The light hearted story has perfect voice casting. I highly recommend it. This is the first story of the series and I belive there are three. The second is the Weeping Werewolf. The third is not available on audible yet but I'll be the first one to download it when it is available.
