Publisher's summary

Hunter. Worker. Legend. The untold story of the dog's role in building a nation.

The Dogs That Made Australia pays tribute to the dogs that gave their all for our prosperity: the fearless hounds that saved fledgling colonies from famine; the courageous heelers and tireless collies that powered the rise of beef and wool; the tough little home-grown terriers that protected the homestead and garden; and the extraordinary police dogs, ahead of their time, loved by the nation. The selfless exploits of our heroic dogs are writ indelibly in our nation's heritage and identity.

The Dogs That Made Australia is a vivid and meticulously researched history of Australia told from the perspectives of the dingo and of the dogs that were imported and developed here, as well as the humans who loved, feared and worked them.

For the dog lovers

I have always been a huge fan of the working dog, especially the cow dog. I had the pleasure of owning a Kelpie and I fear that I won't ever find another like her. Obviously I searched out this subject and when I found this book I just had to have it. This book was written with love and I can't imagine how much work and research went into it. The writing style moves along at a good pace informs the reader on the background of Australia and its need for dogs. It details the breeding history of several dogs as well as the dingo. It also has humor. It was a real pleasure to read.

Well researched

Learned things I never knew about dogs and the history of Australia. The actions of the Australian settlers and later populous seems rather ham handed in regards to the environment. The dog knowledge is profound and inspiring. As an owner of an ACD this book actually made me aware of what kind of a dog I really own. Excellent read.
