About this listen

When it comes to talented new recruits at the Federal Underworld Agency, Nora Jacobs is only half the story....

As a fox-shifter, Shayne Davies gets no respect in an underworld run by the fearsome and powerful - werewolves and vampires, sorcerers, demons, and mythical faerie creatures. Even at home, Shayne is still treated like the brat of the pack. Her mom constantly nags, her intended (but unwanted) mate ensures plenty of awkward silences, and Shayne is even expected to act submissive to the pack's future alpha...a six-year-old.

Yeah. Time for Plan B.

All Shayne wants is to prove that she's got what it takes to run with the big dogs, which is why she is constantly hounding Nick Gorgeous to make her an agent at the "Double D", the Detroit Division of the FUA. That's an easy "No" for Gorgeous, who keeps a strict "No Shayne Davies" policy. Well, never say never.

When mysterious underworld criminals steal a load of bomb materials, the FUA picks up a messy case nobody wants to touch. It's bad enough that a demon horde is involved, but now the annoying FBI has sent out an agent to babysit the investigation. To make matters worse, the notoriously uncooperative master vampire Henry Stadther has control over what may be the only key to breaking the case: a handsome human detective. The whole thing's a hopeless disaster. So guess what, Shayne? You're hired!

Contains mature themes.

Surprised me

I enjoy the Nora Jacob series so it was easy for me to give Shayne a try. I hated her at first, but she grew on me & I'll definitely keep with this series. It is nice to see a different perspective of this Detroit universe, & while there are familiar characters, this is mostly new people & a new story with a few tie ins. I definitely recommend, just get past chapter 5.

Another fun story

It wasn’t as tantalizing as the Norah Jacobs series, and felt a little slow to start despite the early spice served up, but once it got going i got more invested in the characters.
The timeline seems to run alongside Norah’s story, but only directly addresses it a couple of times. Aside from the inclusion of Nick Gorgeous, and capt west, and brief appearance of Terrence.
Shayne grows on you with her foxy wiles and quick wit.
As with the other series the spice is minimal. No graphic descriptions of steamy sex scenes, which I happen to enjoy, but the story more than makes up for that lack with a fair amount of edging lol
I’m looking forward to the rest of this series.

Movie Rights

Jackie May team should have movie rights so they can start production on a movie. The high speed scenes and the intensity of a half crow, half woman demon barreling down on you and that Hillerman FBI agent and her secrets would make good scenes. I wonder who would play Miss Davies?

Not Nora, but Enjoyable- BUT THE PRONUNCIATIONS!!!

I like this series. It’s cute. It’s like the college freshman sister of Nora Jacobs. I will be listening to the rest of the series.

Now… nails on a blackboard to people who actually live in the greater Metro Detroit area (or anywhere the narrator butchers names)- very little is actually pronounced the way it is in the narration. Could you maybe have the narrator call someone from the area? We would be glad to explain Gratiot is pronounced “Grash-it”, etc. I am now climbing off my soapbox and going on to book 2…

Not Nora Jacobs...

I have really enjoyed the Nora Jacobs series, and am looking forward to number 4. Am not so crazy about this series, unfortunately. The narration is lifeless, and the pitch of action is very different. While the characters are unusual and interesting, I found myself fast forwarding through the chapters without focusing on the action, which is a bit like a shoot-em-up movie with too many adrenaline high action stunts and insufficient plot complexity.

Good

I liked the way how Shayne spoked to the reader. These days lots of female leads have a snarky attitude for these fantasy mysteries but her snarkiness was actually funny. I can’t say that her mystery and action was any different than the usual fare but definitely an enjoyable story. There is some mild romance but no erotica thank goodness.

Meh....

Alright so baring in mind that I listened too the original books this book was just meh. The story at times was bland and jumped a little at the end. As for the character of Shayne she was irritating and a lot of the time she frustrated the day lights out of me, then again I believe that was the point of her. The other two mains I kinda liked the detective, he being my favorite character in the whole book, he was a dork and I am very intrigued by his story. One other thing I like about this book was the character dynamics they were nice if not difficult too see how they work at times. Over all this book was just ok and I might give it another listen on a long road trip if I ran out off other things to listen too.
