John J. Prendergast
About this listen
The great human quest is to discover who we really are-a discovery that changes our lives and the lives of those around us. With The Deep Heart, spiritual teacher and psychotherapist Dr. John J. Prendergast invites us on a pilgrimage within.
The "deep heart" is Prendergast's term for our heart center-a subtle center of emotional and energetic sensitivity, relational intimacy, profound inner knowing, and unconditional love. "The heart area is where we feel most deeply touched by kindness, gratitude, and appreciation, yet it is also where we feel most emotionally wounded," writes Prendergast. "Whether we realize it or not, the heart is what we most carefully guard and most want to open."
Throughout The Deep Heart, Prendergast expertly combines the boundaried wisdom of psychotherapy with a spacious, embodied path to liberation, bringing attention to both the joys and pitfalls of each approach. In this experiential guide, Prendergast invites you to tune into your inherent wisdom, love, and wholeness as you journey into the deep heart.
Through precise and potent meditative inquiries, insightful stories, and reflections drawn from Prendergast's intimate work with students and clients, you'll begin to open your heart, see through your core limiting beliefs, and discover the true nature of your being.

"So many of us hold a deep belief that we were born unworthy," reflects Adyashanti, "inadequate, unlovable, and alone." But what if, in truth, we weren't put here to pay penance, change our karma, or "fix" ourselves? What if we chose to be here because we so loved the world that we poured ourselves into it - to make it whole again, to restore "the hidden divinity amid the disaster"? With Healing the Core Wound of Unworthiness, we're invited to entertain that possibility.

Rooted in the Asian wisdom traditions, Wallis’s book uncovers why these oft-heard clichés are “near enemies of the truth" that can distract us from real spirituality, and can even cause unnecessary suffering.

The life of Jesus offers each one of us a map to the direct realization of our eternal and divine nature. On Resurrecting Jesus, Adyashanti excavates the deep, mythic underpinnings of the Gospels to show how we can all find in the story of Jesus the spark for our own spiritual unfolding. Jesus crossed all of the boundary lines that separated the people of his time because he viewed the world from the perspective of what unites us, not what divides us.

In this book of key spiritual teachings from unpublished discourses, the great Advaita Master, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, teaches us that we are not limited to the body. Because of our mistaken body identity, we feel separate from what we truly are. Our identification with the body and mind subjects us to endless cycles of pleasure and pain, desire and fear, which cause us to search beyond ourselves for that which we believe we lack.

In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

Now, for the first time in the English language, Tantra Illuminated presents an accessible introduction to this sacred tradition that began 1,500 years ago in the far north of India.

As much as we might try to resist, endings happen in every moment—the end of a breath, the end of a day, the end of a relationship, and ultimately the end of life. And accompanying each ending is a beginning, though it may be unclear what the beginning holds. In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön shares her wisdom for working with this flow of life—learning to live with ease, joy, and compassion through uncertainty, embracing new beginnings, and ultimately preparing for death with curiosity and openness rather than fear.

Story
New Self, New World challenges the primary story of what it means to be human, the random and materialistic lifestyle that author Philip Shepherd calls our "shattered reality". This reality encourages us to live in our heads, self-absorbed in our own anxieties. Drawing on diverse sources and inspiration, New Self, New World reveals that our state of head-consciousness falsely teaches us to see the body as something we possess and to try to take care of it without ever really learning how to inhabit it.

As our perceptive ability evolves, we must unlearn and relearn the principles of how we live, create, and grow in order to be successful in the rapidly transforming reality of the Intuition Age.

Enlightened teachers insist enlightenment isn’t about finding the solution to a complicated problem. They say it’s just a matter of acknowledging the obvious. When these teachers experience their great realizations, they smile. They smile at the conspicuous nature of their discoveries, as if the truth is hidden in plain sight. And they smile at the ridiculous nature of their previous search. What did these teachers discover? This book tries to answer this question as simply as possible, insofar as the answer can be put into words.

Do intuitive hunches contain information about future events? Is it possible to perceive without the use of the ordinary senses? Many people believe that such "psychic phenomena" are rare talents or divine gifts. Others don't believe they exist at all. The paradox of awareness is very profound and yet very simple. It can't be described because it has no objective qualities and no limitation. Sometimes it comes naturally to the surface when we are fully in the present moment and no longer lost in thought or mental projections. Pure consciousness is neither high nor low, neither pleasant nor unpleasant, neither good nor bad. No matter where we are, no matter what we are doing, we always have an immediate access to that inner stillness.

Deep Gratitude for The Deep Heart
I took a chance on this book after it came up in a search for Adyashanti and was most pleasantly rewarded. The book presents a very clear guide for deepening access to something that I'd guess is sought by many. Prior to listening to this book, opening up to the heart level of presence felt as if it was something I would never achieve, that I was somehow flawed. This book proved otherwise and as the practices started to bring me into direct contact with a feeling of warm and spacious openness that appears to be continually revealing itself.
While it's been incredibly complimentary to my contemplative life, it's also been helpful to my daily life. I've always found it challenging to "get out of my head" and that's impacted just about everything, yet, there has been a shift since going through this book. I feel closer to the people around me, more at ease at work, and am generally happier, too. So, it's been really good!
There were, of course, moments when my mind really wanted to hang on to something and that commonly appeared as becoming suddenly tired, but as I tried not to escape that, I found the heart was there to meet me along the way. If you've practiced meditation you many be familiar with such things, but I want to mention it because this book is far from superficial and that means being pretty real with our self. Fortunately, being real is where you can find the richness.
