Publisher's summary

Every morning, Boone Daniels is out with the Dawn Patrol: four men and one woman as single-minded about surfing as he is, or nearly. They have real jobs; Boone works as a P.I. just enough to keep himself in fish tacos and in the water.

But Boone is also obsessed with the unsolved case of a young girl named Rain who was abducted while he was with the San Diego police. He blames himself, just as almost everyone in the department did, for not being able to save her.

Unexpectedly, he finds himself with the chance to make amends, and this new investigation gives him a wilder ride than any he's ever imagined.

Awesome

I am from Encinitas, CA which is Don Winslow country. I love mysteries and surfing so I decided to check it out. I fell for this book right from the beginning. I loved Boone and his friends. I loved Winslow's storytelling.

But this book totally surprised me. It turned from light and even a little funny to intense and dark. I simply could not put it down. I was so drawn to the characters and the plot action and wanted to find out what happened to Boone and friends.

BTW, the narrator was just great and and really added to the enjoyment. I am reading Frankie Machine right now, by Winslow, and am really enjoying it.

Don Winslow is my favorite new author. Check it out.

Solid detective surf mystery...

I like Don Winslow. I like this world. The mystery was solid. Characters were solid. But...

Ray Porter the narrator took this book down a notch. The guy just takes any seriousness out of it, making it silly. His female voices drive me nuts.

Totally Awesome

What an amazing book. I have to admit I torn into Don Winslow because the book "Savages" was so god awful. However, Dawn Patrol is one of the best book I have ever read, and I'm not really into surfing. The setting and the characters have a lot of depth. The plot will defiantly keep you interested and not wanting to put this one down. Strangely even with all the drama and action taking place in the novel your going to walk away feeling great and with a surprising knowledge about surfing. If you can get through this novel without the sudden desire to have a BBQ on the beach with your close friends.... Than you might now have a soul. seriously by this book.

Deceive @ all cost

When I was a kid in the 1950's I. Lived surrounded with the onset of these ideologies , create misdirection with any actively you become engaged. Learned to speak carrier pigeon English so many did not understand, and only certain groups were interested to understand what you were saying. I enjoyed walking down memory lane.
Now Boone is a cop and is on a mission to solve a disappearance /murder while wading through the society of misdirection!
Enjoy the unusual

Great listen

I'm not into the "Cali Dude" lingo but in this narration Ray Porter makes it come alive and I actually enjoyed it. This is my fourth Don Winslow book and they just keep getting better. I couldn't put it down.

What an awesome, amazing book!

From the descriptions of the waves, the surfers, the serious issues – this book has it all. In beautiful language, Winslow evokes the southern California coast and gives us a rare and real view into the surfers culture – – we won't say lifestyle! Ray Porter does a fantastic job narrating and bringing the characters to life. The mystery in the book is engaging and flows smoothly, even as it forces us to look at the depths of depravity some will go to to make money. Happily, in the book the good guys win… tho it cannot help but leave the reader unsettled realizing that a lot is going on out there that we don't even know about. This is an important and despite the heavy issues, an enjoyable book that I would recommend to anyone.
