About this listen

The newspaper reported the case with relish. Jane (Jinx) Kingsley, fashion photographer and heiress, tried to kill herself after being unceremoniously jilted by her fiance, Leo Wallader. Leo has disappeared - together with Jinx's best friend Meg Harris. But when she wakes from her coma, Jinx can remember nothing about her alleged suicide attempt. Nevertheless, Jinx is convinced that she would never try to kill herself over Leo. Surely it was she who wanted to break the engagement.

When the help of Dr. Alan Protheroe of the Nightingale Clinic, Jinx slowly begins to unlock her nightmares and piece together the fragments of the last few weeks. The truth about what happened to her lies deep within her mind. But what other terrifying memories is she about to disturb?

Narration Spoiled Entire Book

Fake British accent, harsh voices, made this novel almost impossible to finish. I cannot give an unbiased review of the story because the narration was so distracting.

Excellent narration!

I totally disagree with the other reviewer. The book starts off very slow and at times the only reasons I didnt give up were because I have yet to read a book by MW I didnt like, and because the narrator was so great. She is able to create different voices for each character unlike some narrators that make all the females sound alike and all the male characters sound alike. I'm not British, but I listin to so many British novels I can often differentiate between the regional accents. Ms. Merlington does an excellent job. Oh, and BTW, I'm glad I stuck with the book because it develops into a great British murder mystery. I highly recommend!

Stop shouting!

The reader was terrible! She was ok when narrating but whenever there was dialogue she would shout, bark or shriek depending on the character. It became quite wearying.

THE DARK ROOM

The narrator, Laural Merlington is awful. Her fake "British" accent had my toes curling in the first chapter. This lady should never have undertaken the narration of a Ruth Rendell mystery. Audible needs to adopt some system of denoting native and non-native readers or allowing members to listen to short exerpts of the narration before committing to buy. Very disappointed.
