About this listen
In a rugged land steeped in the blood of history, a killer has come back for revenge. New blood on an ancient ground....
In an air-conditioned university office, a man lies dead, brutally bludgeoned. A hundred miles away, in the high, arid New Mexico mountain country that Sheriff Cliff Lansing is sworn to protect, an animal is devastating ranchers' livestock, and is now turning to human prey....
For Lansing, the two cases are linked. The murder victim was part of an archaeological dig, and a local Indian believes that the animal killings have been unleashed by the excavations. Struggling to put together the jagged pieces of a puzzle, Lansing unearths a mystery of a missing emerald carving, a hundred-year-old diary, and a man accused of a crime he did not commit.
To stop the bloodshed, Lansing must throw out everything he has ever believed about police work, evidence, and reason. Because between an archaeologist's ambitions and the secrets still hidden in the land, Lansing must follow his own trail of myth, legend, and intuition - to find a very real killer stalking the night.

Story
Corporate lawyer Ava Burch has had enough of the big city and the daily grind. She grew up with her father, who raised search-and-rescue dogs, in rural Texas and has moved to the small town of Cuervo to spend time in the dry, rugged wilderness near Big Bend National Park. When she and her dog, Huck, discover an abandoned campsite on a volunteer search-and-rescue mission, she’s perplexed, but she carefully photographs it all the same.

Story
When Professor Wilson Bledsoe is brutally murdered, two loathsome white supremacists seem like the obvious culprits. But Bledsoe's younger brother Sterling, an FBI agent in New York, has other ideas. A look around Wilson's lab and interviews with his students, his fellow professors, and the college's president pique Sterling's curiosity about Wilson's nearly-completed project on the mysterious death of hundreds of local blackbirds.

mystical action
this book was action packed not in the same way as the last one but in a more mystical way. there is a lot more academic details about history than the last ones.
my complaint is still the narrator doesn't seem to have much range in voices.

playback issues
The story is as enjoyable as all the others from this author but there is a playback issue between chapters, towards the end of the book the pause between chapters gets longer and longer and then the beginning sentence of the next chapter gets cut off more and more. not enough that I couldn't follow the story but it was annoying.

I recommend Hackler
Good story, good performance and even a bit educational about the landscape, history and culture without being pushy. Very entertaining. I have one Hackler-book in Audible to go: the Mutes. Hopefully the rest of Hacklers books in the series will be available on Audible very soon.

The Dark Canyon
Excellent story about the Navaho nation, the Apaches and the ancient Anasazi cliff dwellers, taking place in both modern and old western times. It’s all tied together very well at the end of the story

Hackler’s Book a REAL THRILLER
Story background contains an excellent range of real world facts that lend Real Credibility to The Dark Canyon story!
Plot is fairly complicated so Hackler lays out the puzzle & just as you think you have it solved the Big Picture, the Story takes a New Twist. I didn’t want to put it down!!!
Great Storytelling Mr. Hackler!
