About this listen

This is the poignant life-and-death story of Johnny Stack, whose young and vibrant life ended by suicide after his descent into addiction to high-potency marijuana and cannabis-induced psychosis.

You’ll laugh and cry with his mother, Laura Stack, as she retells the story of Johnny’s joyful childhood and then takes you through the unthinkable tragedy of his loss. It’s every parent’s nightmare. But this book is much more than Johnny’s story.

Today Laura, who is a nationally recognized speaker and best-selling author, leads a national effort of parents, impacted family members, health-care professionals, coalitions, teachers, and youth who are concerned about the harmful effects of marijuana on our children, teenagers, and emerging adults.

This book is a clarion call for parents across America to educate themselves about the risks of today’s high-THC marijuana products and to better understand the potentially devastating effects on youth mental health. Laura’s real-life story is backed by recent scientific-based research on how today’s potent THC products lead to mental illnesses in adolescents, such as anxiety, depression, paranoia, psychosis, and sadly, suicidal ideation.

This book is her vision to dramatically decrease adolescent marijuana usage, the false perception of safety, mental illness, and suicide, to allow our youth to live productive, happy lives.

Info most people know and most deny

Most of this info isn’t surprising. She layout information and her family’s story well. I feel for those involved.

It was strange that she freaked out about her sones marijuana use yet didn’t care that he vaped. So she appeared to condone one but didn’t care about those other. Why not be consistent? Don’t approve of your child using any dangerous addictive substances. I don’t know why that stuck with me but it lingered throughout the book.

One other thing she kept doing was say that today’s marijuana isn’t the same as “the marijuana we smoked back in the day”. She kept repeating it as if saying that any marijuana was okay and ONLY high potency MJ is problematic. Additionally, not everyone has used or even tried MJ.

That sounds like I didn’t like the book but those were my only issues with it… they just lingered for me.
She presented a lot of information many may not know is out there. She referenced a lot of scientific studies proving the dangers of MJ. She even told people where to find it so they could do their own review of those studies.
Her son’s struggles through her book may actually save lives… and many families.

I recommend this for teachers, parents, first responders, or anyone directly/indirectly impacted by MJ use.

A Must Read

Every one who knows and loves any adolescent, must read this book. Laura bravely tells the gut wrenching story of losing her son to the new, high potency THC. Even if you think what you know about weed, you have no idea what it has evolved to today.

Must read!

If you have a young person in your life this book is a must read. Both educational and persuasive, I learned so much about the dangers of today’s marijuana. Thank you Laura for sharing your story. Johnny is continuing to make a difference, as he’s helped a mother of two teenage boys understand the potential dangers, and hopefully make lifelong impacts on their decision to abstain. Thank you!

Our son’s story

Our soon to be 25 yo son has been smoking marijuana since age 16. He quit his job August in 2021. He never learned how to drive. He was always high. We’ve called the police many times. They’ve taken him to hospitals, but he’s always released. He’s suicidal without it. We thought at first it was just a phase. We didn’t want him to drive around with his friends all high. He has no friends at all. I cry daily. I want our sweet son back. Now he’s just mean and sarcastic. We’re planning to take him to a homeless shelter soon. It hurts our hearts immensely. Someone he used to work with gets the marijuana from a dispensary. Since he’s on his last batch I know the screaming will be soon. He knows we will not support his addiction. I’m so sorry for your loss. I cried so much listening to it. Your story could very well be ours. I pray it’s not. Sending my love and prayers.

Eye opening story of love and determination in response to a senseless tragedy.

I don’t know how anyone could read this book and not realize that the danger of marijuana is real.
