About this listen
*Narrated by three-time Emmy-Winning Author A. R. Witham*
If you liked Red Rising, A Deadly Education, Pitch Black, or The Great Escape, you found the right novel.
_____________________________
A fast-paced pirate adventure for the rebel in all of us, A. R. Witham weaves a story of courage, friendship, and survival inside a deadly magic school.
The Locke Institute has only three rules:
- Obey your betters.
- Gather at sunrise.
- Be inside by sundown.
But some men can't be told what to do.
Rooker Flynn is a rebellious, hot-tempered pirate who never met a rule he didn’t break. He wants his freedom, and he will stop at nothing to get it.
But the Headmistress is determined to break Rooker's spirit; she will use bounty hunters, giant poisonous spiders, and an arsenal of dark secrets to keep her pupils in line.
Good thing Rooker knows one student who is smarter than all the rest put together; a kid genius who knows strange mysteries that are not of this world.
Working together, Rooker's bravado and the kid's brains might be enough to outwit their captor and stage a daring escape...or die trying.
_____________________________
This book has sharper teeth than The Legend of Black Jack, but then again, so does Rooker Flynn. A suspenseful thriller, this is a quick listen that you will not be able to pause.

Story
It's the first and greatest rule Inkwell Featherfield ever learned. It's also the only way he knows how to survive—besides picking pockets, dodging the law, and using every ounce of his plucky charm. But none of this will be enough to save him now. If only he'd never snooped around a dead man's house. If only he'd never found that pocket watch full of strange magic. If only he'd known the old man had snuffed it at the hands of the ghostly Spektors, or that such dark spirits even existed, because now they're after him.

Are you kidding me?!
This was wild. I don't know what I was expecting but what I got was a four course meal of fantastic story telling, fun machinations, compelling character development, and top tier narration. A banana split with spiders for nuts and a tear-jerk cherry on top.

Darkly fun story, awesome narrator
This is my first Keymark story and I am absolutely going to go check out The Legend of Blackjack soon. it was a bit difficult to get into the world at first since magic dimensional shifts aren't my thing, but in a prior book I believe this is all explained.
This is a great cast of characters brought to life with full personality by the author/narrator. I love passionate narrators and Witham goes well out of his way to make this reading a great performance. if he ever needs a side gig, children's audiobook narration is an option!
While this felt like a YA book, many themes and plot points got quite dark like torture, body horror, betrayal, and many bitey spiders. I think it's a YA with caution story for sure but easily enjoyable by adults.
If you like nonstop action and great performance, this is an audiobook you should definitely check out!

Welcome Back to Keymark!
Stop reading this. Go get the audiobook! You won’t be disappointed.
This is a really difficult review for me to write because I LOVED the audiobook & feel I won’t do it justice but also want to gush about it! What can I say, I’m conflicted?
Great spin off series! You should listen to The Legend of Black Jack first but you really don’t need to in order to enjoy this story. Still, I loved that book too!
The Crimes of Rooker Flynn is a bit his origin story and the first installment in the Locke Institute trilogy (book 2 is due JAN 25). I’m not a huge fan of long boring reviews that spotlight every inch of the book because I want to Listen And Find Out for myself. So I hope you didn’t come here for a book report.
I’ll mention it again later but I don’t want to ruin the story for you.
I suggest that you read the publisher’s summary (it’ll give you a taste of what’s to come) and GET ON WITH IT!
This is a fantastic story. It’s definitely darker (thank you Mr. Witham) than The Legend of Black Jack, but not too scary. I’m arachnophobic but loved the monsters in the book. The bad guys are baaad & I love to hate the bad guys! Oh their evilness is crystal clear!
There were so many great characters in The Legend of Black Jack!! If YKYK. Rooker Flynn & of course Jack Swift were my favorites so I was excited to see them together again. They are wonderful together!
As for the scary, darker moments. I read The Shining by Stephen King when I was 14 and wouldn’t suggest this one to anyone too much younger. Reason? Possible nightmares cuz there are a couple trigger warnings. I mentioned arachnophobia for a reason. lol
The author narrates the book & is the perfect voice for Jack & Rooker & a baddie! (another lol)
Why are you still reading this? I’m not going to share or give anything away! GO LAFO!
5+ stars! Fun! Very fun! Compulsive! Unique! Fast paced! Dark humor! Morally gray! More great characters!! Keymark is developing into an even richer wonderland of spectacular horror & had a depth, a richness that sucks you in for a memorable whirlwind tour.
Join me in Keymark! You won’t regret it.
I can’t wait to return to Keymark in the sequel, The Trial of Rooker Flynn.
PS - Chapter 2, page 47, last sentence … and it begins … NOOOO!!!! 🕷️🕸️
