Publisher's summary

Captain Amy Cornwall has 48 hours to commit an unspeakable crime - or lose her family forever.

In her career as an Army intelligence officer, Amy Cornwall has seen haunting sights half a world away. None compare to the chilling scene at her Virginia home. It is empty.

A phone rings with a terrifying ultimatum: locate and liberate an unnamed captive in 48 hours, or her kidnapped husband and 10-year-old daughter are dead.

Now, and in open defiance of Army Command, Amy must employ every lethal tactic she has to save them. To succeed, she must discover not only who dispatched her on this mission, but why. Without her family, she's dead anyway.

Suspense and satisfaction

A great story with a satisfying ending. So glad to finally see a strong woman as the protagonist in a usually male dominated genre.

Kept wondering why

Throughout the entire story Amy kept referring to her daughter by her given name, Denise. It was always "my husband and Denise" Or "as I think of what is happening to my husband and Denise" or "my poor Denise". I kept wondering why any mother trying to save her family would refer to her daughter in such an impersonal way.

Okay mystery/thriller

I liked the start of this novel. Amy Cornwall is an Army intelligence officer, and her husband and daughter are kidnapped. Amy must free a captive in order to get her family back. This story had twists and turns, but each made the story less interesting. The characters were not especially interesting or believable, but the ploy had a good rhythm, so I did not quit. I don't think I will read or listen to a Brendan DuBois novel again. Too typical. There was some exciting moments, but not enough.

Too graphic for me

I’m happy that there weren’t more torture scenes but I would be truly happier to have none. I couldn’t find my way to liking any of the characters. Even the main protagonist was lacking any empathy and would happily kill total innocents in her quest to get back her husband and daughter. I can understand killing the bad guys but willingness to kill people not involved in the abduction makes her just as much a monster.

Overall good, however....

The story was well performed, and the plot was decent; however, there were a couple of hiccups.. Chap 48, 01:02 mark, Fred McCarthy refers to Cpt. Cornwall as Lieutenant Cornwall.. also chapter 91 @ 01:41 Cpt. Cornwall refers to Major Winter as Cpt Winter when testifying.. should've been caught during editing, but... story was still enjoyable..
