A clean regency romance with a touch of intrigue

Story: 5 stars

I truly enjoy Gayle Buck's regency romances! He characters are well-drawn and believable. This plot deals with a seemingly normal house party and the numerous guests are interesting and varied. The hostess is the younger sister of the host, Lord Chester, and it is very much through her eyes (she is an astute observer, by the way) that we get our interpretation of the different personalities and their motivations.

The clashes of personalities and the worries of the hostess take up much of the plot of the book. The exchanges between the guests are interesting in and of themselves, but the hostess' own confused feelings about a former male friend, who happens to now be a widower, is the icing on the cake. Is it to be a romance? We are left guessing to the very end.

There is some international intrigue to add spice and interest!

Ms. Buck's books seem to capture the Regency era in an authentic way and yet are still quite understandable to the modern reader. Very much character-driven, which I find to be truly enjoyable!

Narrator: 5 stars

Julia Eve does it again! She has a lovely reading voice, low enough to make the male voices believable, and varied enough that most characters have their own "voice". (There are A LOT of characters in this book!) She does an excellent job of acting and conveying emotions that feel authentic. I've listened to a number of her books and find that her voice creates a wonderful atmosphere! (Her editing is seamless; there are no skips, or glitches or repeats.)

A sweet Romance!

This is a sweet romance written with much detail to the period with the soirees, costume, habits and past-times of the era.
The story begins and continues to run with much happening and it also has a lovely second chance romance as well as a surprising new one.
The characters range from really pleasant, young, old, nasty or criminal and each one is quite lifelike.
I enjoyed the very pleasant narration by Julia Eve as she helped bring this story to life.
I listened to the audiobook version and my voluntary and unbiased review is recorded above.
