About this listen

In this delightfully fiery rom-com from The Checklist author Addie Woolridge, even the worst situations have a silver lining.

Aspiring artist Neale Delacroix should be on top of the world. She’s landed a spot in an exclusive art program that’s sure to be her ticket to success, but then her best shot at stardom goes up in flames - literally. When her relationship follows suit, Neale finds herself a stone’s throw from rock bottom.

Her heart broken and her dream deferred, Neale decides to work a soul-crushing nine-to-five job until the heat dies down. However, that’s not exactly what happens when she meets Anthony, a sizzling coworker with a perfect smile.

Convinced that she breaks everything she touches, Neale’s sworn off art and men. Yet her creative spirit still beckons, and she can’t get Anthony out of her head. She’s caught in that familiar space between daydreams and responsibilities, desperate to find a new way forward. With her future hanging in the balance, Neale must decide if she is down and out...or ready to bounce back.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Adenrele Ojo's vivacious narration will have listeners quickly invested in Neale Delacroix's chaotic attempt to reinvent herself. Ojo's energetic voice perfectly reflects Neale's bright-eyed enthusiasm as she leaves her disastrous career as a performance artist and picks up a desk job…. Ojo's multifaceted performance also features several other character voices, including those of Neale's supportive sisters, who are given voices tailored to fit their distinct personalities…. An engrossing listen for those wanting a lighthearted romp.”AudioFile Magazine

“Woolridge’s introspective narrative tackles the limiting behaviors that stem from comparison and failure. Focusing first on the growth of the characters, Woolridge makes every connection feel genuine and the romance well-deserved for both Neale and the audience.”Publishers Weekly

“Woolridge’s romance has a diverse cast of characters, some laugh-out-loud moments, and a nice change of pace with its art world setting.”Library Journal

Hard to root for the girl when she is so flakey

I started off liking the Neal, the heroine. She was sweet and trying to make it on her own, but the way she played with Anthony's emotions annoyed me. I dont mind a slow burn, but I dislike the 'I can't commit for (insert random, petty reason of fear)' after giving hope of a relationship. Anthony never gave her reason to run.
With that said, the narrator did a good job and the writing was good with creative characters. It's a clean story with minimal if any cursing. They talk about sex more than it actually happens. We get the before and after. Even though the character is late 20's, it felt like a coming of age story. It felt like an adult YA story, which is ok but not for me.

Another great adventure…

I love how This book highlights the arts and culture of the Pacific Northwest. I also love the fact that sisters can make room for each other, get in each others way, while still supporting their dreams.
