Story
When Olympia leaves her small Virginia town, she doesn’t expect to look back, much less ever come home. But after a year on the road, her sister’s engagement pulls Olympia into everything she left behind: her family, her husband, and the grief she’s been trying to forget. She’s determined to stay a few days, maybe a week—just enough time to visit gravestones and sign off on the divorce her husband, Spencer, asked for. But he’s reeling from their shared loss, as well as complications with his aging parents, leaving his heart just as fragile as Olympia’s.

But when the remains of her long-missing stepmother are discovered, Vera will have to face a past that threatens all she is. She and her sister Eve had a fairy-tale childhood: good until it was tragic, with a stepmother they never found a bond with. At least they had each other, a baby half-sister, and a mutual devotion that would have them do the unthinkable.

Publisher's summary
In Prohibition-era Los Angeles, two women on opposite sides of the law must take control of their lives, make their marks, and try to survive. Even if it means crossing the line.
It’s 1927. Letty Hart’s father is long gone, but his old winery provides a meager wage and a legal livelihood for selling sacramental wine. But when that contract goes bust, Letty stumbles upon a desperate option: her father’s hidden cellar—and enough liquor to tempt Letty to bootleg the secret stash. In an underworld dominated by merciless men, Letty is building an empire.
Officer Annabel Forman deserves to be the first female detective in the LAPD. But after two years on the force, she’s still consigned to clerical work and policing dance halls. When Annabel connects a series of unsolved murders to bootlegging, it’s a chance at a real investigation. Under the thumb of dismissive male superiors, Annabel is building her case.
As their formerly uncompromised morals erode, Letty and Annabel are on a collision course—and determined to prove they’re every bit as ruthless and strong-willed as the powers that be who want to take them down.
Critic reviews
“The author is a certified sommelier who provides interesting detail on winemaking and Prohibition. A well-paced historical mystery with plenty of twists and an action-packed and surprising conclusion.”—Historical Novels Review
“History meets mystery meets feminist fiction in The Bootlegger’s Daughter. Utterly enthralling from the gripping first line to the wonderfully provocative last, Nadine Nettmann’s Prohibition-era page-turner features an ingenious premise and formidable cast of characters—especially the women, who are deftly portrayed with period accuracy and trailblazing fortitude, as much a product of their time as they are ahead of it.”—Wendy Corsi Staub, New York Times bestselling author
“With a pitch-perfect ear for time and place, Nadine Nettmann takes the reader on an unforgettable journey through Prohibition-era Los Angeles into a world full of danger and intrigue. Letty and Annabel are both strong characters and show what women were capable of during an era when so little was expected of them. I highly recommend The Bootlegger’s Daughter for book clubs and anyone who savors great writing and a window into history at the same time.”—Anita Abriel, internationally bestselling author of The Light After the War and The Life She Wanted

It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Pippa Jones is a fortyish former literary sensation who fears she will be a one-hit wonder. After the follow-up book she was almost done writing, Podlusters, had to be tossed (it ended up sharing a plot and title with superstar author Ella Rankin’s summer blockbuster!), she couldn’t write a thing. Months of staring at a blank page made her confidence vanish like a one-night stand. Fun, Thriller, Coming of Age
I enjoyed the historically accurate escapism this book provided me. It had strong female leads in the prohibition era. This was fun, at times suspenseful, and all around enjoyable quick read.

ENJOYABLE BUT AT TIMES A LITTLE SCATTERED (3.5 Stars)
I really enjoyed this one. It was part of Amazon First Reads and I’m glad that I took a chance with this author. I thought it was a debut novel because the plotting was a little scattered and there wasn’t much character development but I did really like the three POVs. I would read more from them. I like reading stories set in this time period so it was already starting off on a positive note for me.
Though scattered, the book does move at a good pace and I kept wanting to pick up the book and read more.
Really enjoyed Letty’s character. I liked how strong and determined she was though a little naive. I love a villain POV, so Raymond was definitely my favorite chapters to read. I was warm on the Forman chapters. It just felt kinda of flat sometimes. I admit my ignorance because I did not know there were women patrol officers in the 20s so that was an interesting fact to Google.
The ending was presented as a twist but you can honestly see the twist coming after the first few chapters. It didn’t bother me though. It ends like there could be a book two and I would read it.

Thee we narrators
One good thing that made this story good were the narrators. They were excellent. I liked the setting and history. The story worked despite all the plot holes. And there could have been better character development in order to accept the choices the characters were making. Had she done that, the twist at the end would have actually been surprising and plausible. I really wanted to like this given that by the time the twist ending came I was invested. But it was so mediocre and clunky I was truly disappointed. I’m glad I didn’t pay for this.
