About this listen

This infamous compendium of the strange and unexplained, including UFOs and strange weather, was the result of decades of research in libraries by its author, Charles Fort (the inspiration for the term "Fortean"). Worldwide occurrences of the supernatural and the paranormal are documented, with names and pages of sources provided. Fort's literary contemporaries who admired his work included Ben Hecht, John Cowper Powys, Theodore Dreiser, Tiffany Thayer, Sherwood Anderson, Clarence Darrow, and Booth Tarkington. This production excises Fort's numerous forays into his speculative Super-Sargasso Sea theory in favor of focusing on his voluminous research and reporting - as author Colin Wilson said of Fort, "the facts are certainly astonishing enough".

Makes you think

Charles Fort gives numerous examples from scientific papers and reports of strange phenomenon that occur during the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Just shows that there are still many unexplained things in our world and universe. Also humbling to know that we don't know everything and there are still fun mysterious things to think about. Even if they are never answered.

I Liked It

I can’t speak about whether or not this is abridged. What is here satisfies me. I enjoyed the reader’s languorous presentation of the text. It is perfect for Charles Fort because he sounds like he might be joking while voicing an ongoing list of supposed facts that lead to disturbing conclusions. Well done.

Book is abridged!

Huge sections and full pages are omitted! I only discovered this when I looked in my physical book to highlight some passages. I was wondering why the writing seemed so disjointed! Very disappointed that the book wasn’t marketed as an abridged version.

Missing material

This audiobook is not unabridged. Most of the first chapter is skipped. The first chapter is important because it describes the philosophy of the book.
