About this listen

An earthly nourris sits and sings

And aye she sings, Ba lilly wean,

Little ken I my bairn's father,

Far less the land that he staps in.

(Child Ballad, no. 113)

So begins a stunning tale of love, loss and revenge, against a powerful backdrop of adventure on the high seas, and drama on the land. The Blue Salt Road balances passion and loss, love and violence and draws on nature and folklore to weave a stunning modern mythology around a nameless, wild young man.

Passion drew him to a new world, and trickery has kept him there - without his memories, separated from his own people. But as he finds his way in this dangerous new way of life, so he learns that his notions of home, and your people, might not be as fixed as he believed.

Beautifully illustrated by Bonnie Helen Hawkins, this is a stunning and original modern fairytale.

Volume

I found it difficult to listen to the book when the narrator whispered. Other than that I loved the story and the narrator was good also.

Wonderful

Wonderful and compelling. Writing and narration is exquisite. I love the fairy tale that incorporates modern social concerns as well.

First read of a book by Joanne Harris...won’t be my last!

The level of fantasy and adventure was great! I’ve recently been reading the classics and needed a story to break up the old English and lengthy novels...The Blue Salt Road did that for me. I enjoy the legend and stories about the ocean and the far North always intrigue me. I will be reading more by Joanne Harris

Bitter fairy tale with and aftertaste of honey

Harris leaves me always in awe. A tale of men and women, of lovers, parents and grudges, of betrayal, lies, and forgiveness.
But above all, beautifully wowen fairy tale with magical creatures and epic journeys, ordinary people growing to become extraordinary.

I didn’t like it at allll

Very childish retelling of the l’agenda of the selkies. The narrator not so bad but still it did not lift the story enough.
