Publisher's summary

Bo Tully is the sheriff of Blight County, Idaho, where law enforcement is usually pretty mundane: tracking down truants running away from school, picking up country boys who've had a few too many beers. But Tully gets a little more than the country norm when an ex-con calls with the startling news that there's a corpse draped across one of his fences. Tully needed a birthday present for his Pap (the retired sheriff) anyway, so the two of them head out to investigate the murder. In a tone that's one minute wise-cracking and the next...well, still wise-cracking...Tully and Pap use their wiles to figure out what's happening in this little and not-so-dull town.

Lots of fun and no bad language

The caracters in this book are just that..characters, and I hated to see the book end. I loved the way this author handled profanity, humorously with out actually using it.
Some books have way to may four letter words for my taste. When this book was over, I hurried to audible to see if there were any more books by this author about these folks and was very disapointed not to find any.

Fun listen, even the second time.

Maybe because I'm from the rural West, but this was like eavesdropping on friends. The characters are real and the story was solid without being over-done. Was sad when it ended.

Second time through
Sheriff Bo Tully isn't the brightest, likes to think he's the best looking, and would rather be painting than solving a murder, but it's Pap's birthday and the old man does love a good dead body. In honor of Pap's 75th, he gets three dead bodies.

The Skagg family, long known to the law enforcement community of the area, got a dead man hanging over their fence. A little tracking later, and Tully finds the dead man's two dead friends. At least, they're dressed alike and all seem to be from L.A. What brings three city boys to the Skragg ranch in Idaho? Nothing good, Bo figures.

This is a cozy, outdoor type of mystery. If you like your heroes slightly flawed, slightly amusing, and successful in the end, this is your kind of story. Short, sweet, and Pap's a hoot. No PC in his repertoire.

Hilarious

What a welcome change to have a book about murder and crime keep you laughing all the way through! Loved the narration - it was a perfect representation of father and son bickering! Worth a credit for sure!

Pretty fun

A lighthearted Longmire. In fact in setting, in characterization, in plot scenario and all it's very, very, much like Longmire. I wonder who plagiarized whom. My biggest criticism is that it feels like every female character has only been written in to either act as eye candy for the main characters, or to fawn over them. It got a bit old hearing the sheriff size up each woman he encounters. There's a couple plot holes that aren't weren't mentioning. They don't ruin the fun for me.

The reader's voice put me more in mind of an 80s rom com than it did of a western-style murder mystery. But his performance is expressive, his characters are distinct, and he gets the job done.

Over all, I think I'd recommend this one.

Good Mystery from Patrick McManus

I really enjoyed this story. The main character reminded me of a cross between my uncle Virlyn and Peter Weller. The only complaint I have is the audiobooks chapters aren't divided correctly. This is a minor complaint and certainly didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. I just saw that this book was written by Patrick McManus so I had to check it out. I grew up hearing my uncle read "The Night the Bear Ate Goomba" barely able to breath because he was laughing so hard. He did that a couple of times a year usually around Christmas and the summer.

WHAT A TREAT

For anyone who has ever read McManus' previous books of delightful essays or his shaggy dog stories you will be delighted and for mystery readers you should be happy also, plot is well done, characters are great, and pace is perfect. am really looking forward to many more of this series.

great read

Didn't know what to expect but loved it. All the characters, all the fun, and no explicit language to worry about. Would love to see more 'Blight' books.

Adventure, characters, and fun

Patrick McManus book uses his knowledge of Idaho to draw you into this adventure and mystery. I really enjoyed the discriptions of the parts of Idaho that I have visited and characters who live in these communities. This is a great mystery with a lot of fun attached. The conversations fit the community he is writing about. Giving you a good idea of how things work in a small town. Living in a small community I could relate to many aspects of small town life. Well worth the price and time.
