About this listen

THE PERFECT FAMILY

Sheila O'Rourke has always known her husband isn't perfect. Who is? But things have been better since they moved to Seattle to make a fresh start. So much so that when 16-year-old Eden turns up, claiming to be Dylan's child by another woman, Sheila tries to be welcoming.

CAN BECOME

At first, Sheila feels sympathy for the girl. Eden's mother recently fell to her death in an incident with unsettling parallels to Sheila's past. Still, Eden is a difficult house guest, sowing discord among the family. Sheila has already been on edge for weeks, receiving anonymous texts, noticing odd noises coming from the house next door. And that's just the start.

A PERFECT NIGHTMARE

Sheila wants to trust Dylan. She wants to feel safe in her own home. But no one can hurt you more easily than the ones closest to you...the ones you keep believing until it's too late....

Narrator was unbearable

The story was pretty good, but the narrator made it so difficult to listen to. Her voice was a constant whine and pleading. You couldn’t even tell what needed emphasis.

Narrator ruined story

This is a pretty good book however I could barely finish it due to narrator. Over the top in my opinion. She gets almost hysterical at times. Will remember her name so I do not make that mistake again.

Started out slow

The narrator was definitely not good at the beginning, though she got a bit better along the way. The plot was a bit slow as well picking up around the middle. Overall all it was a decent listen.

Great story

Horrible narration! There were times when it was very difficult to take in the narration. I love the story itself but lawks, the narrator…

Kept me guessing

Just when I thought I knew who the antagonist was…
I love the twists and turns and hope there is a follow up book!

Suspenseful

I enjoyed the book so much but I hated the narrators voice when she would be gasping while talking when the character got scared or hurt or angry. But overall I wish we could get a part two lol the ending left you with so many questions.

Protagonists annoyed me...

I really like Kevin O'Brien and like most everything he writes. I have mixed feelings about this book.
If you have read the publisher's summary you basically know the plot. That part is very good. It's the characters I would like to throttle!!
First, the husband. This man doesn't need a zipper on his pants, just give him an open fly. He has one illegitimate daughter (conceived while he was married), multiple affairs. When the illegitimate daughter comes home to roost what does dear old dad do? He finds a woman at his gym to fall head over heels about. When a meeting with gym lady goes awry because he has to meet with new daughter's teacher. What does dad do? SLEEP with the teacher.
Mom. She's aware of many multiple affairs by her husband. Ok, she left him once but returned. When hubby's daughter comes to live with them, mom tries to make her feel welcome. She finds spiders in her bed, Visine in her juice, washing machine shorts out and she's almost electrocuted and finally ground glass in her bourbon. Don't kick her out, try to set a trap and find out more about her background.
I won't bother getting into the kids.
Are there really people out there like this?
The ending kinda makes up for the rest of the book but...
Ann Marie Lee does a very good job narrating.
RECOMMENDED for entertainment, not believability.

Geez

Well I actually made it through the entire book. The narrator is so awful. Listening to her continual breaths was so annoying!! I will watch for her name and stay away from books she reads. It was free so glad I didn’t waste a credit on this.

Pretty good story narrator irked me!

The story kept me intrigued but then dragged on with many extra characters which caused it at times to be confusing. The narrator reading in such a rushed voice and exclaiming with gasps caused me anxiety! I felt like she thought she was narrating a self help book. The ending left me saying WTH? The husband has another illegitimate child out there from spreading him sperm through the years?!

Loved this!

It was truly a great story. I love crazy pants psychos and the fact that you can’t figure out the twist because it’s hard to think like one.

The narrator, on the other hand, made me cringe 😬 so much. I’ve heard her in other books too. It’s so important to choose the right narrator!
