Shortlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize

From the author of Skippy Dies comes Paul Murray's The Bee Sting, an irresistibly funny, wise, and thought-provoking tour de force about family, fortune, and the struggle to be a good person when the world is falling apart.

The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

If you wanted to change this story, how far back would you have to go? To the infamous bee sting that ruined Imelda’s wedding day? To the car crash one year before Cass was born? All the way back to Dickie at ten years old, standing in the summer garden with his father, learning how to be a real man?

The Bee Sting, Paul Murray’s exuberantly entertaining new novel, is a tour de force: a portrait of postcrash Ireland, a tragicomic family saga, and a dazzling story about the struggle to be good at the end of the world.

Performances take a funny, beautiful, and tragic story to a whole other level.

This has definitely been my favorite performance of any audiobook I’ve listened to. I often both read and listen to lengthier books like this to help me get through them in a timely manner. I loved the story and Paul Murray’s wry style but I often found myself listening to sections id already read and vice versa. The voice artists constantly brought new perspectives in their readings. I laughed at things I had to thought funny upon reading the text and each family members humanity is really brought wonderful light both through the prose and performances. I’d put this up there with The Great Believers in terms of brilliant effecting novels enhanced by performers who really understand the material and bring it to life in a way that will stay with me forever.

The NON-ending ending. Dissapointing

This book was well written. Author took time to really develop the characters and their various backgrounds stories. I was on the edge of my seat until the last word. However, I feel cheated by the ending. There could’ve been multiple endings to this book. Instead the author just bailed and it was a frustrating non-ending. I feel like I hung in and invested 27 hours only to be very frustrated at the end.

Don’t want to spoil it - but I was very disappointed

Can’t say much more without spoiling. Performance was wonderful but the book did not live up to the hype.

Excellent portrayal of contemporary adolescents/emerging adults and their parents

As with “Skippy Dies” I enjoyed the most the interior thinking of the younger family members in this story as well as the flashback to their parents story when they were just beginning adulthood. But each main character is depicted sympathetically but realistically as they struggle with family stress that was apparently triggered by financial stress because of recession. As the plot proceeds it’s clear the recession isn’t the main stressor , though, but instead as in many families hidden histories or a hidden present that slowly emerges ( or in the case of some threads never fully emerges). It’s a long book/ audiobook but the threads of the different family members kept me absorbed. Warning if you are someone who wants an ending where everything is tied up neatly , this book won’t give you that. But definitely an enjoyable read!

Wonderful Performances

A long novel that I wish hadn’t ended. I continue to think about it and the numerous well written and performed characters. For a couple of days , I reached for my phone before remembering I’d completed The Bee Sti

This was an amazing novel

This is not a happy story, but I just loved the complexity of the characters and the way life unfolds because of the decisions they make and the secrets they hide. I didn't try to predict events but let the story unfold. One of the comments expressed a strong distaste for the characters and how unlikeable they were. It's true, they are all flawed, but in the end they are understandable and relatable. The narrator that captures Cass's voice, a surly teenager is amazing. Cass is an angry, mouthy, moody teen, as many are, and the narrator captures just how awful teens speak. I couldn't stop listening to this fast paced story that puts the subconscious and motives under a microscope.

Fantastic

Every person in this story feels real. You root for them. you cringe for them, and. especially, you want to know what they will think or do next. though these characters are so expertly crafted that you have a pretty good idea of where they are headed. The rare modern book with a powerful story worthy of its elegant prose. Each member of this family feels like they rate a whole book to themselves -- putting them all in the mix together is a treasure to be savored. Highly recommended.

Amazing!!

Loved hearing the character’s POV. The story is suspenseful, well written, detailed and complicated. Best audible I’ve ever listened to!

Cowardly

I hate books like this. Like the author is too much of a coward to tell you the ending. This just leaves us in suspense and angry that we spent so much time reading without any consolation.
