About this listen

The Beast Keepers is the story of Jonathan F. St. Roche, a young veterinarian, who takes a job in the rural Ohio town of Carrollton. He soon discovers it is a safe haven for a menagerie of mythical creatures (including a pregnant Pegasus, a flying monkey with a sprained wing, a centaur with Cushing’s disease, and a unicorn with a sweet tooth), who rely on him for their medical care and shelter from the outside world.

When a deadly basilisk threatens the town, Jonathan and his new friends must balance the dangerous creature’s needs against the risk to the community.

Intriguing and Fun

A small Ohio veterinarian, Jonathan F. St. Roche, is charged with caring for mythical creatures and preventing a basilisk from completing its deadly rampage. Although the animals are unexpected, Roche steps up and provides the needed care and shelter very reminiscent of Dr. Doolittle.

Julie Fudge Smith, the author, weaves a magical story involving mythical creatures needing medical assistance and protection from the human world and their environment. It is a distinct storyline enhanced through clear and detailed descriptions of images and experiences. The dialogue is realistic and propels the story seamlessly.

Benjamin Fife, the narrator, delivers a captivating performance with his rich tones and inflections. Not only did he easily slide into each character but did so smoothly and effortlessly. His performance enriched and added depth to each character and situation.

This is a truly delightful story!

Loved the entire concept. It was a nice and seamless mix of normal and paranormal. An entire new take on companion animals!

The Beast Keepers

This delightfully imaginative book invites the listener to visit a small town in rural Ohio where a new veterinarian is introduced to various creatures he believed to have been mythological. The animals are safely living there, protected by many of the townsfolk. The story is a sweet, pleasant escape from everyday life and the sad events occurring in our world. It was recommended to me by one of my favorite narrators, the very talented Benjamin Fife, who brings the characters to life with wonderful voices. His rendition of the talking goose is especially noteworthy. His skill as a voice actor includes an excellent sense of timing, making listening a real joy.

don't waste your credit.

This book is repetitive and badly written. The concept is good and the narration is fair,is just that the writing is like pulling teeth. One person asked a question? Let me info dump the history, personal trama, and funny details about what you asked . The animals or people are doing something? let's make it a jumble and talk about animal movement , sunlight and what smells are like. Couldn't get past chapter six.
