Publisher's summary

Fought in a tangled forest fringing the south bank of the Rapidan River, the Battle of the Wilderness marked the initial engagement in the climactic months of the Civil War in Virginia and the first encounter between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee.

In an exciting narrative, Gordon C. Rhea provides the consummate recounting of that conflict of May 5 and 6, 1864, which ended with high casualties on both sides but no clear victor. With its balanced analysis of events and people, command structures and strategies, The Battle of the Wilderness is operational history as it should be written.

Narrator is beyond horrible

I have listened to many dozens of books on audible, but never have I encountered one so bad. Often I could not understand what he was saying. Is it too much to ask for a native English speaker, Because this guy sounded like English was maybe his fourth language.

Enjoyed this unique presentation - great story

Gordon Rhea’s coverage of Grant’s 1864 Overland Campaign is thorough, captivating, and a good page turner. Jared James’ narrative is certainly unique - a deep Caribbean accent paired with a rich storyteller’s rhythm. There are some for whom it’s probably too much. I came to enjoy his characterizations - especially commanders on the field.
Yes, there are a few glitches. “Shiloh” was probably the most jarring - that should have been caught in post-production- but they’re really few and far between.
The story itself is first rate and captures the back-and-forth carnage that was The Wilderness. Rhea doesn’t bog down in minute detail of units nor does he get lost in biographical detail of Lee, Grant, Longstreet, Meade, etc.
A pdf package of maps and illustrations would have been helpful for the novice but can be obtained elsewhere.

Worst narrator of any book I’ve listened to

Is the narrator a joke? Not only does he have a Caribbean island accent, but it’s so strong to the point I have to replay certain segments.
Great book but save your credit and get the book or ebook.

Terrible Narrator

This is a great book by Gordon Rhea but the narrator was just horrible. Terrible accent, even worst pronunciation and cadence. I wish I could return for my credit back - I can’t follow this at all! Big disappointment.

Narrator a distraction

Poor grasp of American English pronunciation by the narrator was a great distraction from an otherwise well written and obviously well researched book.

The narrator destroys the book

The storyline is good. However, the narrator’s heavy accent and mispronounced words such Jubal Early are a distraction. I can only listen for short periods and I know I am missing portions of the storyline.

Avoid

Gordon Rhea’s Overland Campaign series is beloved by Civil War enthusiasts and when I saw it has been added to Audible I bought it without sampling the narrator. MISTAKE. While I’m sure this narrator is good at many other books, he is totally out of his depth at reading Civil War history. It’s almost like he goes out of his way to mispronounce names and words. It’s unbelievable that Motion Audio would hire someone who has no idea what they’re reading and not at least give him a pronunciation cheat sheet. Very disappointing.
