Publisher's summary

This is the story of a battle that changed the course of the Civil War and called upon two men—Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln—to summon every ounce of their courage, intelligence, and bravery. The Battle of Gettysburg is known as one of the defining moments of the American Civil War. It was the bloodiest battle of this conflict, resulting in over 50,000 combined casualties over three fierce days. In early July 1863, two great armies converged at the small town of Gettysburg. The aim was seemingly simple: General Lee sought to gain leverage in the North and bring relief to war-torn Virginia by obtaining the bounty of the rich, Northern farms. Lee thought he had it all… after all, he was in command of an “invincible army” that had just claimed a stunning victory in the Battle of Chancellorsville.

Except he wasn’t counting on the immense military strength or brilliance of the Union… or the deadly result of his choice to attack the Union’s central line on Cemetery Ridge. This decision may seem like just a high-risk strategy gone wrong… but it was so much more than that… it was the result of a staunch belief in the power of offense, the immense confidence in his army, and the burning desire for a decisive blow. Lincoln, meanwhile, was cool, calm, and every inch in command. His timely decisions included the appointment of the clever Major General George Meade following the loss of confidence in his predecessor. This book goes beyond military strategy and searing ambition… it delves into the minds and hearts of great leaders who would do anything to defend what they believed in.

Well Paced great Narration

This title was well paced, given the gravity of the material. It was summarized well, and gave a sense of completeness. I enjoyed the pace as well, as historical works can be dense at times this was fantastically composed.
