About this listen

Please note: This memoir is for mature audiences only. It features sexual content, adult language and themes, and brings da ruckus. Discretion is advised. Too hot to handle? Go to the clean version.

Sophia Chang is a badass of the music industry. As the daughter of Korean immigrants in predominantly white suburban Vancouver, she grew up shunning the “model minority” myth. Armed with a fierce sense of independence, she moved to New York City and infiltrated the world of hip-hop, yet remained mostly in the shadows of the artists she supported. With her debut memoir, Sophia Chang is finally ready to grab the mic for herself. This inspiring story spans her adventures in the music business, her path to becoming an entrepreneur, as well as her candid accounts of marriage, motherhood, marginalization, and martial arts.

For decades, she worked behind-the-scenes helping remarkably talented men tell their stories, including rap and R&B stars like the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, GZA, and ODB, as well as A Tribe Called Quest, Raphael Saadiq, and D’Angelo. As an A&R rep in her mid-20s, her world underwent a seismic shift upon encountering a formidable group of nine MCs known as the Wu-Tang Clan. That union would send her on a transformational odyssey, leading her to an enigmatic Shaolin monk who would become her partner, an enduring kung fu practice, two children, and a reckoning with what type of mother, lover, and woman she ultimately wanted to be.

In this Audible Original by Hello Sunshine, Sophia Chang drops knowledge about her motivating journey that took her from record label boardrooms to the Wudang mountains as she built a life shattering biases about Asian women. To this day, she declares she was “raised by Wu-Tang”, and she brings da ruckus as the baddest bitch in the room. At last, her memoir shows the world exactly what that means.

Are you KIDDING ME!?

Where have you been? I know, inside. Burning inside. I've only made it thru 1 hour 44 minutes and I knew I would be listening to this 11 times over from the first 30 seconds. Connect to this. Explore this experience. See what resonates and what doesn't. I've really opened myself and found the resonation doesn't stop. I feel you. I don't know you as I know me but I know you just a little more now. Thanks. No really! THANK YOU. I get it. Creative expression of anger is a thing. Let's break that down. Creative expression is ok. Spoiler alert. 2 hours 6 minutes. Chapter 3: Enter the Wu-Tang..... woa

Read it!

I loved this Audible memoir from the moment I heard Sophia Chang promoting it on NPR. Like many people, I had no idea that Sophia Chang existed last week, but after hearing her story - narrated in her own, powerful voice - I find her to be an inspiration. This memoir is the candid, star-studded, fun, sad, and most of all, strong, tale of the Wu-Tang Clan’s honorary sister, “Soph.” In a captivating narrative that includes many notable figures speaking their own lines, Sophia divulges so much about her life, from highs and lows in her career to love and heartbreak in her personal life. Sophia does not shy away from taboo subjects such as sex and money, and frees the listener to revel with her and take solace with her in equal measure. Like all women, Sophia is well-rounded. She is the woman who was told that she was too “hard” to find a man, and too “aggressive” to run someone’s career, but she is also the woman whose voice breaks in grief over lost loved ones, and swells with joy at the thought of her children. She shaved her head in accordance with her martial arts practice in her thirties and started documenting herself living her best life in her fifties, but as a petite Asian woman, for much of her life she felt small and in need of protection. I loved the inside details about well-known artists and the bonus content at the end of the memoir showing that Sophia’s love for her “bodyguards” is reciprocated, but the main draw for me was Sophia herself. She’s honest with the listener and does not hold back parts of her personality that could be off-putting for some people. She embraces who she is, strengths and vulnerabilities alike, and doesn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks... she’s the baddest bitch in the room! And for that reason, this memoir was exactly what I needed right now.

So inspiring...

Thank you so very much for this. I’m a 51 year old, recently single mother, trying to step into my own “bad assness”. Your words were so validating of my struggle and encouraging of my victory.

Thank you.

Baddest Book on Audible!

This book was so original and you just can’t stop listening. It’s as raw as can be. I cried a few times because it was hitting home for me hard. I felt so moved after listening. Very hopeful that I’ll be just fine as soon as I get out of my own way. I just related on so many levels. I’m about to turn 50 and this book just made a light bulb go off in my spirt. I see why she’s so admired. Kudos to Sophia Chang! Can’t wait to see what is next from her!! You owe it to yourself to give a listen.

SOPHIA CHANGE I THINK I LOVE YOU:)

I didn't know what to expect from this audible but I'm so glad I chose it. It was so easy to listen to transporting me back in time seeing NY and music through her eyes but also remembering my own pieces of history throughout the music timeline. This audible made me feel damn good in my spirit!!
