Publisher's summary

After years of physical and mental abuse, Jade thought her kindly foster mother would be the answer to her prayers. She was wrong … this is her staggering true story.

‘This must be what prison is like,’ I thought as another hour crawled by. In fact, prison would be better … at least you knew your sentence. You could tick off the days until you got out. In the Bad Room we had no idea how long we’d serve.

After years of constant abuse, Jade thought her foster mother Linda Black would be the answer to her prayers. Loving and nurturing, she offered ten-year-old Jade a life free of fear.

But once the regular social-worker checks stopped, Linda turned and over the next six years Jade and three other girls were kept prisoner in a bedroom they called the ‘bad room’.

Shut away for 16 hours at a time, they were starved, violently beaten, forbidden from speaking or using the toilet and routinely humiliated. Jade was left feeling broken and suicidal.

This is the powerful true story of how one woman banished the ghosts of her past by taking dramatic action to protect the life of every vulnerable child in care.

Sad story well written

This book was sad in so many ways. I found myself invested in the story despite wanting to turn away.

Very moving story

Of course, it’s always nice to know someone has made it out of such a dark, and harrowing, life situation.

Very good

Sad but grabbed me. Shame on people. Glad they got a settlement at the very least.

Her ability to be a over comer

Very sad situation all the way around. But very encouraging to hear and see her succeed despite her circumstances

Amazing story. Unmissable

I gave this book a bash while I was working and couldn’t stop. I completed it in a day. It’s such a harrowing and horrific tale from such a brave person. You feel like you want to jump in the book and stop it from happening. An unmissable read, can’t recommend it enough. 5*

Horrible Situation

The abuse in this book is unbelievable but given the fact her mother turned out to be schizophrenic at least explains some of it. There must be some serious issues with foster care in the UK. There are a lot of stories of foster abuse. I'm stunned at the lack of response by DFS. They documented everything; they just didn't do anything and put the kids right back with their abusers. No wonder kids don't report it; every time they do they get beaten even more and put back with their abuser. This alone is unacceptable and should have everyone angry.

Just riveting

This story reminded me if some of the horrors my retired deceased mother from Child Protective Services in the US shared with us when qe woukd say Hey Moma how was your day? I just felt so terrible as an empath for these children. Both my mother and I taught toddler and adolescents for years she was headstart as was i and moved thru the ranks of jr high. Therefore so partial to the babies. Lord have mercy. I felt i was reading about some of my kids at school and it helped me to know that many many children in the school system live this life right under noses and they are so fearful of where the abuse comes from they dare NOT tell on them because too many times we have let them down before when they asked for help the best way they knew how... what an amazing bookread. Thank you.

Incredible story!

I just can’t believe this woman got away with so much for years. I thought they had to look at the rooms in the home. Just heartbreaking that this will be with her for life. I am happy she got to tell her story and hope that this never happens again. The system failed her. Well written! Thank you for sharing your story 💜

Sad

This is a sad story so I’m hesitant to review it. The story itself needed a bit more. Not sure what exactly, but more. I realize how hard it must have been to put those memories out into the world,so I’m not judging the content or lack of at points. The narrator did well in my opinion. Could have used a bit more expression during excited moments perhaps. All in all it was a good listen.
