About this listen
In Azusa Street Mission and Revival, Cecil M. Robeck Jr. brings to bear expertise from decades of focused study in church history to reveal the captivating story of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Los Angeles, which became known as the Azusa Street Mission. From humble beginnings with few resources, this small, uniquely diverse, and inclusive congregation led by William J. Seymour ignited a fire that quickly grew into a blaze and spread across the world, giving rise to the global Pentecostal movement. Sifting through newspaper reports and other written accounts of the time as well as the mission's own publications, and through personal interaction with some of those blessed to stand very near to the fire that began at the mission, Cecil M. Robeck Jr. not only relates the historical significance of the revival but also captures the movement of the Holy Spirit that changed the face of modern Christianity.

Story
Leonard Ravenhill's call to revival is as timely now as it was when it was published over 50 years ago. The message is fearless and often radical as he expounds on the disparity between the New Testament church and the church today. Why Revival Tarries contains the heart of his message. AW Tozer called Ravenhill "a man sent from God" who "appeared at [a] critical moment in history", just as the Old Testament prophets did. Included are questions for group and individual study.

As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

Two things astounded me about this book. One; how much I had learned over the past 40 years about the Azusa Street history without Robeck's book. Two; how very, very much I learned BY Robeck's book. Excellent and Riveting!

Unexpected
Not at all what I expected, but really glad I stuck with it. I expected more accounts of the miracles and supernatural events that occurred during the revival. But I believe I learned a lot more reading the history of these amazing people, their commitment to spreading the gospel, and their tenacity under opposition. I highly recommend this book.

Powerfully Honest, incredibly thorough!
I do not come from a Pentecostal tradition and to be honest wasn’t sure what to think about it. However, God has been stirring and being led by the Holy Spirit into a closer relationship with Him. This work was an excellent source of insight as to how God stirred then and what He might do again a little over 100 years later. Moreover, the author paints a brutally honest picture of what began in 1906 and the celebrations and hardships along the way.
Pro tip: do yourself a favor and listen at least at 1.3 or higher. 1.5 was perfect for me to listen, and reflect.

Very well researched and eye-opening
Take aways from Azusa are these: Seymour was a man of serious prayer (as much as 5 hours/day). Meetings were more like 1 Cor. 14:26 as they all sat in a circle and each exercised their gifts rather than one person preaching. No tithes were requested, instead people followed the NT model of giving. No programs or structure existed as the Holy Spirit was allowed to lead. When flesh crept in Seymour would address it gently and bring back order without quenching the Holy Spirit. No formal denomination or business organization formed in the beginning but when it did it became problematic to addressing future issues of division. Most leaders that left to start a different gathering in the midst of the revival did so in transparency and integrity almost like they were sent out. Revival is not meant to last forever in this age. Instead it was meant to transform us and the surrounding community for mission, as in the Great Commission and Great Commandment! Key things to do to prolong a revival are these: Get your doctrine written down up front to avoid disputes. Those leaders and core members that left with an agenda were primarily due to spiritual warfare and flesh whereas if they had kept short accounts with God (1 John 1:9) and each other (Matthew 18:15) most of it could have likely been avoided. Use a communication platform that cannot be hijacked like their newsletter was. There are many more take aways to be had so enjoy gleaning as you listen and/or read! Matthew 16:33 and Acts 3:19!
