About this listen

In the near future, to escape the crush and clutter of a packed and polluted Earth, the world’s elite flock to Atopia, an enormous corporate-owned artificial island in the Pacific Ocean. It is there that Dr. Patricia Killiam rushes to perfect the ultimate in virtual reality: a program to save the ravaged Earth from mankind’s insatiable appetite for natural resources.

A strong narrative with several distinct voices propels the listener through this brave new world, painting a powerful and compelling vision of a society that promises everyone salvation with passage to an addictive, escapist alternative reality.

Series has me on the fence

The first two characters in retrospect were like kindleing for the fire, not to mention really annoying. Only a handful of the characters are any good, and the last quarter of the book (especially the Baxter's) is just outright disturbing. I have the sequel, but I'm on the fence about reading it or not. The delivery of the writing is not my cup of tea.

Confusing at times but all the strings come together in a nice knot.

Starting this was difficult because it was hard to track the individual storylines and the shifts in perspective but by the end all of them coalesced into a wonderfully beautiful and interesting whole.

Excellent start!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Atopia Chronicles, Book 1 to be better than the print version?

I prefer the audio version due to separating male and female characters.

What other book might you compare The Atopia Chronicles, Book 1 to and why?

none at this time.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Bob. Stepped up when he had to and became a leader.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Finding out all the drama behind Jimmy (poor guy).

Any additional comments?

Looking forward to the next book and how things will move forward.

Most annoying reading voice ever

Could barely get started. Ended up with the paperback copy, no way is this lady listenable.... Fran Dresher meets a SIRI knockoff... awful, just awful

Not what I expected but interesting.

Was a strange way to get the point. Some aspects seemed unnecessary. I would recommend it if it comes on sale or the special of the day.

Amazing production, above average story

The ensemble narration cast was simply amazing, but the story really took far too long to develop. I was very bored with the story until the very end when suddenly it all coalesced into a cohesive plot. I’m excited for the continuation of the story now, but it was painful to get there.

The narration really got me through the drudgery, I know I’d never have made it through the print edition.

LOVED THIS BOOK!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. My favorite character was Bob. I want smarticles so I can have a shark tow me into 40' waves! The parts about Jimmy's very sad childhood were hard to get through though, Did not enjoy reading that part but other than that I really enjoyed the book

too many characters

slow in places, lots of characters to keep track of, so had to play close attention.

It jumps off the page. Well narrated

The author has created a world so amazing and wonderful the story flows without you knowing where it is going. It is riveting while at the same time creating a space for deep discussion on what defines us and what defines humanity.
