About this listen

Tucked away in a remote corner of North Carolina's Fort Bragg, behind rows of razor wire and heavily armed guards, lies the headquarters of the nation's most elite counter-terrorism unit: the United States Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta. Here, a brilliant new approach to combating terrorism has just been born. Its codename: The Athena Project.

The novels will follow an elite team of female warriors from their recruitment as top-level athletes, through their training, to their deployment on some of the most exciting and dangerous international assignments the fiction world has ever seen.

Brad Thor's listeners will be electrified as he employs his vast knowledge of covert operations and military intrigue to bring to life his most heart-pounding, globe-trotting thrillers yet.

Lack luster

If your a Brad Thor fan this particular book slightly misses the Mark. Definitely not his best book. I still enjoyed the story as it's a necessity to continue the complete series. I prefer to read the actual books and allow the characters to develop in my own mind, however, I could only find an audio version. The narrator was extremely painful to listen to.

Anticlimactic Ending

This book was definitely exciting and it held my attention. However, the exposition was odd because it started with its focus on a character that you don't see again anywhere in the book. The ending was totally abrupt and rather anticlimactic. Had I actually read the whole thing (rather than listened to it on a long plane ride), I think I would have felt as if I had wasted my time... Good story but I'd rank the actual writing structure as a 1 (out of 5).

Great read.

We need more Athena team books. I love the tough and smart lady Delta team.

Great book

Went a different way with this one, I was pleasantly surprised. It doesn't compare to Scott as the lead character, but it was still good.

Different but good

while this is not a Scott Harvath book, it is still a good story. Lots of action and twists and turns. Definitely a good read for any Brad Thor fan.

Nazi super weapon updated

Fast paced and good character development. Story could use more work on theory but generally ok.

Great Concept Not Fully Developed

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the book, but it was a spin-off that did not stand on its own. If this had been the first Brad Thor book I had read/listened to I would not have looked for more of his work.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was fine.

What three words best describe Elizabeth Marvel’s voice?

Great voice/voices

Was The Athena Project worth the listening time?

It was worth listening to but raw.

Any additional comments?

Brad Thor does a great job writing about a hero with a supporting cast. The Athena project had a team of heroines without a central heroine. There just was not enough depth to warrant a team. The conflict situations moved too quickly for team action. The characters were not developed well enough to hold your attention in team action.. The dialogue between team members was minimal.

With a team I think every character must has a singular awesome purpose. While some characters on the team are said to do this or be better at that, none really demonstrated their hero status in any situation. I actually found this better demonstrated in the Athenas in another Brad Thor book with Scott Harvath as the protagonist.

When I first started listening to the book there is a very kick-butt scene, and I thought Brad Thor had nailed it, but other than that one scene there really was nothing else.

All of Brad Thor books that I have read/listened too have been popcorn and peanuts hero, action, intrigue. This book is no different, and it is fun from that stand point, but none of the characters were as well developed as Harvath or Nicholas. This means that they were not as interesting.

OVERRATED

The story of 4 female super US agents that are in the role of black op agents. They make more mistakes and still tell how great they are. The narrator with her diff. voices does an ok job, but the plot is thin and the girls sound like a bunch of Class B actors. A book I for sure would had never bought if I had known the story line and players. I hope all of Thors books are not like this, although I think I had bought another one his books and it was just as bad.
