About this listen

To most, Daniel is the charming owner of an oddities shop he inherited from his grandfather, but looks are deceiving.

Charged with keeping the worlds safe - from magicals and humans alike - Daniel leads a double life, leaving no room for anything - or anyone - else.

When a relatively straightforward mission takes a turn, it plunges him into a dangerous new world where no one can be trusted.

He must live a lie within a lie while he works from the shadows to keep the worlds safe from a deadly new threat.

Everyone has their limits. Will Daniel survive being pushed past his?

Great for Harry Dresden Fans

This is a wonderfully written and performed story that keeps you on the edge of anticipation. Things were explained without overly much narration and as needed. The reader was never kept in the dark about the world but didn't have to sit through long explanations. The main character is very believable and a normal every day guy while still being heroic.

Magic, guns and fast cars

Daniel is a secret agent for the CIA. He has all the nifty gadgets and cars that go along with the job. He also works in Rooney’s Antiquities and Oddities shop with his retired grandfather. The shop provides the cover for all his travels and it is a way for him to procure interesting items for the shop.
His work in the CIA is with a new division. It’s mission is to protect the country against foreign magic particularly Oriceran. Daniel is extremely dedicated to the mission and protecting people in general.

While on a mission he discovers there is a threat from an alien source. Further, a hidden group within the CIA, Fortis, has known about aliens for years. This group is for the eradication of aliens. Daniel joins his mentor’s group to study and acquire alien weapons and to save the country against Fortis.

This story has three subplots:
• Daniel working in the CIA to keep the country safe and within a group in the CIA to keep the country safe from Fortis.
• Daniel, known as the mayor in his neighborhood, works to keep the riff raff out by any means necessary.
• Daniel, the son, looking for information about the “death” of his parents.

All of this helped Daniel create his codex where he pledges to protect his neighbor, country and planet from all enemies foreign and domestic, human or magical, terrestrial or extraterrestrial.
If you like gun fights, nifty gadgets and fast cars this is a story for you.

wonderful book and narration..

This was a pretty good book. Good enough that I'll move on to the next story. I just hope they don't spend too much time playing and talking about Dungeons and Dragons. I was totally lost during that*******

But I did like Daniel. He was very good at stealing artifacts from other people and museums, and he didn't hesitate to kill a person, or 20. And his fun little toys reminded me of 007's toys, only he had more of them than James Bond did*******

There was no romance whatsoever, not even a girl, so I have no idea what that book-cover is all about. And the F-bomb was used 80 times*******

As to the narration: Seth Podowitz did a great job! His voices were spot on and he actually laughed when it was called for.

Not very thrilling

Decent story but not much really happens. As a first book I understand its more setup story but there isn't really a villain introduced, what antagonists are included dont really do much. Its balancing 3 different sets of threats for the protagonist to juggle and doesnt do almost anything with any of them until the end where it concludes the minor threat to him and lays out that there will be more books. Was okay to listen to as background noise at work but not worth it much more.
