About this listen
Did you know the American Revolution changed how Britain treated the rest of its colonies?
The American Revolution was fought between the 13 Colonies and the British Empire. Although most thought the British would win, the colonists overthrew British rule and established their own country. Other people realized the ideals of the American Revolution could be applied to their societies. They also wanted liberty and justice for all.
For years, scholars have studied individuals or specific events of the American Revolution. They focused on revolutionaries like Alexander Hamilton or events like the Battle of Lexington and Concord. But the American Revolution was more than just a few people and battles. It was filled with world-changing ideas.
It's time to step back into history and learn about the American Revolution. In this new and captivating book, you’ll discover what made the American Revolution so special and how it still influences us today.
Here are some of the questions you will uncover within the pages of this book:
- Was the Boston Tea Party really a party?
- How was Abigail Adams a revolutionary?
- Why did the first English colony vanish?
- Who started the Boston massacre?
- Why didn’t King George III want to let the American colonies go?
- Where was the Battle of Bunker Hill fought?
- How did the Sons of Liberty help the revolution?
- Was the revolution fought because of slavery?
- Why were the colonists so angry about taxes?
- When did the French join the revolution?
- Why did the colonists create the phrase “no taxation without representation"?

The Chinese created an amazing society that grew from along the banks of the Yellow River to oceans and lands beyond. Yet they worked hard and built a culture that still survives - and thrives - today. Let’s take a close look at some of the most notorious leaders, their culture, and what drove them to persevere through the thousands of years it took to build the China we know today.

Story
Alexander Hamilton, unlike many of the other founding fathers of the United States, was born outside of wedlock and was an orphan at the age of 13 after his mother died. He was thrown into the world, depending on the charity of friends and neighbors. That perhaps is one of the reasons why Alexander Hamilton was fiscally sensitive and always anxious about funding and finance, not only for himself but for the new nation of the United States, where he emigrated when he was in his late teens.

Story
Though the men of Versailles (and they were overwhelmingly men) had arrived in Paris to put an end to World War I, by the time the conference ended, the main goal of the diplomats and national leaders had turned into ending wars for all time. Obviously, that did not work, and as a matter of fact, the end result of the Paris Peace Conference - the Treaty of Versailles - would likely cause more wars than any of its authors could have possibly dreamed of, including World War II.

Story
One of the darkest and cruelest chapters in the history of the United States occurred when the nation’s young government decided to remove the native peoples from their lands in the name of profit. Having helped settlers for hundreds of years, five Native American tribes found it increasingly more difficult to relate to, and trust, the country that had once acted as their allies. The native peoples had fought alongside the Americans to gain freedom from England, the nation that the colonists deemed oppressive and unfair.

Story
Texas is one of the most recognizable states in the United States of America (it is the second-largest, behind Alaska), and it also has a reputation for being unlike any other. This reputation is well-deserved, in part because of the state’s long and often contentious history. From the heyday of the Wild West and the state’s oil boom to the storied Texas Rangers and the construction of one of NASA’s primary facilities, it seems nearly impossible to fully explore everything in the state’s rich past.

Story
In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

Was the Civil War really about slavery? Or was it a war fought over money? Civil War historian Samuel W. Mitcham Jr., (Vicksburg, Bust Hell Wide Open) opens his fascinating new book, It Wasn't About Slavery, with Dr. Grady McWhiney's claim that "what passes as standard American history is really Yankee history written by New Englanders or their puppets to glorify Yankee heroes and ideals".
