Publisher's summary

An unforgettable, harrowing yet hilarious story about growing up in the midst of chaos by award-winning songwriter Aimee Mayo. Mayo is one of the few females to receive both BMI's Country Song of the Year and Songwriter of the Year awards, putting her in the rare company of Dolly Parton and Taylor Swift. Her songs have sold more than 155 million units worldwide and have spent 26 weeks at number one on the Billboard charts.

Aimee Mayo grew up in deep Alabama, rocked by the blow of a drunk man's fist before she even made it out of the womb. Her colorful and charismatic father went from a gambling janitor to a multimillionaire but died homeless. Her mother was wonderful when she wasn't popping pain pills like M&M's, and her stepdad made a weird science out of psychological abuse. Throughout her teens, Aimee survived by writing compulsively in diaries, dreaming of becoming a songwriter, and finding her soulmate.

After accidentally burning down her house - just one in a series of disasters - at 20 years old she found herself lost with no path to the life she had always longed for. She tried to kill herself and almost succeeded. Finally, Aimee made it to Nashville. She started out a waitress, married to a wife-beating country singer, but never lost sight of her dreams. Talking to the Sky is her unforgettable memoir, the harrowing and hilarious story of believing in faith over fear and going after your dreams when everything is going against you.

Never Give Up On Your Dreams

Absolutely loved this book. I laughed, cried and cheered right along with Aimee as she told her incredible story. Her courage, honesty and perseverance is truly inspiring. I downloaded this book because Kenny Chesney posted it online and had no idea of what to expect. I am a huge KC and country music fan and really enjoyed how she weaved behind the scenes and “before they were famous” stories. Aimee proves that nothing can stop you from achieving your dreams if you want them bad enough.

What a life she has lived. Makes me realize anything is possible and life is about making your own opportunities and fighting for them.

I will be talking to the sky every day after reading this.

An amazing story of love, heartache, family, and then the hard stuff of mental illness, abuse, gambling, loneliness. How this woman overcame it all is inspiring and amazing. I listened to her own voice tell her own story and I can promise you, I’ll be talking like her for a few year to come. I want to clap to the heavens knowing she is living all the dreams she wrote about in her little diary started at 8 years old. I think her being pissed off periodically during her life catapulted her towArd her dreams. And NO ONE was going to stop her. And she had plenty of reasons to give up. I love the focus on dreams. Put it out there into the sky, into the universe, only then can it become your reality. Excellent!!! Thank you Aimee! I celebrate your success and love. Xo

This is a MUST read for songwriters! So inspiring.

Songwriter friends, I’m on my second time around with this lovely book by Aimee Mayo. Being dyslexic I decided to purchase it on Audible. Her narration has kept me company on bike rides, walking our dogs, home projects, and in and out of songwriting this past week. First listen, I burned through it all in one day!

Aimee’s life has been one hit song after another. She has LIVED the songs she writes and her book shares her life’s story (so far).

She is truly an overcomer, a gifted songwriter, and now an author. Her life has been such an inspiration. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for sharing, Aimee!

So heartfelt and inspiring!

Amazing story, so funny, heartfelt and inspiring, I cried the whole time! And something about her narrating it with her own voice makes it even more special. 😭

Entertaining

Talking to The Sky is full of emotion full of ups and downs. I wouldn’t call it funny, by any means, but there are laughable moments, horrifying tales in between, and a truly happy ending. I found it entertaining listening to Aimee’s deep southern accent. She is an amazing, descriptive writer.

What an amazing person!

I am amazed of what Aimee when thru from childhood to adulthood and achieved her dream goal. She never gave up. The story was also an attention getter because she was actually telling the story. My heart ached for her many times during her years and was happy during her good times which she didn’t have many of those during her growing years but she never gave up or turned to drugs or alcohol. Yes she drank beer once in a while and got drunk a few times but never stayed that way hoping life would get better bring drunk. My hats off to you Aimee. God bless and good luck in your future!!!

Amazing.

Laughed and cried. Felt so real of the so many memories of those days and Glencoe and Hager hill and well, so much. I’m so proud of Aimee. Strength and courage and her vivid descriptions and storytelling are beyond what I expected!
