About this listen
Practical tips to start living a sustainable minimalist lifestyle
As you may already know, it is very common for people to attach much more importance to material things than they should. Minimalism helps us make room for the truly important things in life: our passions, what drives us, our family, our health, etc. But it also helps us be more conscious of the environment as minimalism and sustainability go hand-in-hand. Living a minimalist lifestyle often brings us very close to also living a sustainable lifestyle. Let’s look at how we can take that extra step to protect our planet.
A sustainable lifestyle is not only easy to achieve but if done right, it can be a really rewarding experience. This book will give you some easy tips to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
The Diderot Effect: Why we want things we don't need?
The phenomenon, “part psychological, and part deliberate manipulation,” drives heedless shopping and creates needless waste.
There are more examples of the Diderot Effect all around us:
- We buy a new shirt or dress…and immediately begin looking for new shoes to match, instead of maintaining a minimalist wardrobe.
- We bring home a new couch…and suddenly the end tables in our living room appear old and shabby, in need of replacement.
- We move into a new home…and use the occasion to replace our existing bedroom set with a new one.
In each circumstance, the reality is that we already owned enough shoes and our end tables and bedroom furniture worked just fine before. But because something new had been introduced into our lives, we were immediately drawn into a process of spiraling consumption.

Story
Minimalism is about getting closer to what gives you pleasure. We are all aware that quality of life has nothing to do with consumer products, and that "substance" is not a measure of success. A minimalist life leads to freedom — freedom from debt, unrest, and the rat-race. Any excessive things, whether unused, unnecessarily purchased, or unfulfilling in nature that you remove will feel like a weight lifted from your shoulders.

Fumio Sasaki is not an enlightened minimalism expert or organizing guru like Marie Kondo - he's just a regular guy who was stressed out and constantly comparing himself to others, until one day he decided to change his life by saying goodbye to everything he didn't absolutely need. The effects were remarkable: Sasaki gained true freedom, new focus, and a real sense of gratitude for everything around him.

Story
Most of us know we own too much stuff. We feel the weight and burden of our clutter, and we tire of cleaning and managing and organizing. While excess consumption leads to bigger houses, faster cars, fancier technology, and cluttered homes, it never brings happiness. Rather, it results in a desire for more. It redirects our greatest passions to things that can never fulfill, and it distracts us from the very lives we wish we were living. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Story
Finally, a housekeeping and organizational system developed for those of us who'd describe our current living situation as a "f--king mess" that we "really need to get around to fixing one day". Unf--k Your Habitat is for anyone who has been left behind by traditional aspirational systems - the ones that ignore single people with full-time jobs, people without kids but living with roommates, and people with mental illnesses or physical limitations. Most organizational books are aimed at stay-at-home moms and people who seem to have unimaginable amounts of free time.

Amazing resource on where to start with a minimali
Stephanie has truly created a terrific resource on where and how to start living an eco-friendly lifestyle. This guide has prompted me to begin looking at my own over-consumption behaviors and how they contribute to my own life, as well as to the global community. This book has both inspired me to not only begin changing how and why I buy the things I do, but also how I go about my everyday lifestyle. Stephanie provides a clear, organized, and easy (not to mention non-judgmental!) path on how to go about making incremental changes.

Wow, just wow! This book makes you think!
Such an incredible book! Stephanie brings key issues into light - how we can reduce our dependence on items and buying, but in a sustainable way. I love the way that this book connects many stories from other readers and listeners. Having the shared experience reminds us that we can all take small actions to benefit the greater good.

The last chapter also has a lot of great design a
The strategies touted in this book follow closely what you find in the Kondo books, but the ways they implement them are more practical. This takes into account that most of us live with other people and pets. There is also an emphasis on environmental concerns and intentionality. The last chapter also has a lot of great design advice, and the book overall has some beautiful photos.

She gives the down and dirty tips the everyday person can implement into their lives to feel like they are making a real difference in helping to save and protect our planet.

Helpful book.
Really love this book. I like how it is organized. I enjoy the lists. Makes me see different ways I could be doing things. I love how it focuses not only on minimalism but on how to get rid of useless things to people who may see them as useful. Give things a second life or maybe even a third.

The definitive book on sustainable minimalism
I pre-ordered this book because I wanted to live a (slightly) more minimalist lifestyle and I genuinely care about the planet. After hearing Stephanie's podcast, I knew she was the right person to guide me on this journey. I have decluttered and organized in the past (even hired professionals help) only to find that within a few months, everything is once again starting to pile up. I was missing a piece of the puzzle and this book does an amazing job at providing practical tips as well as the overall ethos of sustainability.

The total picture
I've listen many books and watched many YouTube videos on minimalism and decluttering over the last five years and this is the first time I've read a book that gives me permission to buy what I would like in order to complete a room and make it stylish!
