About this listen

In the autumn of 1938, Germany's reichsführer, Heinrich Himmler, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block the passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve: a first summit of Mount Everest.

Seventy years later, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn's ninth visit to the top of the world's highest mountain, this time in charge of the 16-year-old son of a Long Island billionaire, begins to unravel. As a desperate fight for their lives begins in the freezing air high above Tibet, Quinn stumbles across a clue to a story that challenges everything he thinks he knows about the great mountain.

When the bitter aftermath of Quinn's disastrous climb turns to violent tragedy in Kathmandu, his discovery pushes him into a relentless journey that takes him from the dangerous heights of Everest to the equally treacherous margins of a new Europe, where history hungers to repeat itself.

Amid a rich and diverse cast of characters, all with their own reasons to possess the mystery of his discovery, Neil Quinn has to fight, increasingly desperately, for order and the truth.

Vivid and Memorable Stoies of Climbing Mt. Everest

Only an experienced mountain climber could have written this book. Mr. Farthing, the author and narrator, makes the book come alive. I look forward to his next work.

Into Thin Air with Nazis and evil Frenchies

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Mountaineering action thriller, set in two frames - modern day, around the start of WWII. The book parallels these two interrelated stories through the entire book. Each story has a moral passion play around Nazis, with most complex complex characters. One element I liked at lot was the interplay between pathos and action.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Oh yes - two plot lines, actually. Most of the book is about the two protagonists, but time is given to the antagonists as well. The French antagonist is straightforward evil, as are the Nazis, but there is some depth of character there, too. Good ending as well - don't want to give it way.

What does Harry Farthing bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent narrator. Does a real good job on the evil Frenchman, and has a good range of English and German accents. Since I don't know any Tibetans, I cannot comment there.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Would be long for one sitting, but I had a hard time putting this one down. Great action scenes - would make for an excellent movie, IMO.

Amazing!

Would you consider the audio edition of Summit to be better than the print version?

Love the audio edition because it separates the characters by accents and it brings the story more to life. Narration was phenomenal.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Becker....he has a very high moral code and will do anything to save the people he loves and even strangers.

What does Harry Farthing bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

As I said, to hear the various accents of the characters is far better than just reading the words.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, too long. but the story was easily stopped and restarted because the chapters would change from the early years to the present day.

Any additional comments?

The parallels between Becker and Quinn were well done. Also the descriptions of the altitude problems were very detailed and it was easy to imagine what the characters were feeling.

Great book.

Harry Farthing must be a true mountain man. His descriptions of climbing made me feel like I was right there with him, (only I was warmer). There were a few times when I needed to backtrack in order to follow the story line but it was worth it. His characters were very well developed and their fates kept me on the edge of my seat. I would have given this book 5 stars but some of the classics can't be beat.

Interesting concept

Really enjoyed this book for its originality. This was not a formula book. I bought it because of Mt. Everest and was pleased to get the Nazi plot as well. Unlike most authors who read their own book, this one sounded like a professional reader, adding to the enjoyment of the story. The villain was a little over done at times bu t overall I highly recommend this book.
